Suzuki Marine Gear Oil 90 is a specialized gearcase lubricant designed to meet the demands of Suzuki outboard motors. As an API GL-5 class oil, it contains highly effective EP (Extreme Pressure) additives that protect the bevel gears and bearings in the lower unit from metal-to-metal contact, even under extreme torque and load conditions. This oil maintains stable lubricating performance at high operating temperatures and RPM, preserving an optimal film between gear teeth even when the engine runs for extended periods at high speed.
One advantage of Suzuki Gear Oil 90 is its ability to reduce gearcase noise. In use, it cushions the meshing of gears and contributes to quieter engine operation – a sign of proper lubrication and healthy gear function. The oil also has excellent anti-corrosion properties – even in marine use, it protects the internal surfaces of the gearcase from rust and corrosion. Added anti-foam agents ensure the oil film is not compromised by foaming, providing continuous protection even if a small amount of water finds its way into the gear housing.
Suzuki Marine Gear Oil 90 is available in various packaging sizes (e.g., 350 ml, 1 L) for convenient servicing. It is tested and approved by Suzuki, making it the best choice to maintain the factory performance and longevity of your Suzuki outboard. Using genuine oil ensures your gearbox runs smoothly and reliably, minimizing the risk of costly repairs due to inadequate lubrication.
Typical use cases:
- All models of Suzuki outboard engines – from small portables to large V6 motors – requiring SAE 90 API GL-5 gear oil for the lower unit
- Annual gear oil change during scheduled maintenance of Suzuki engines (recommended at least once a year or every 100 hours of operation)
- Servicing the gearcase after periods of intense use (e.g., after the summer season) or if water intrusion is suspected – refilling with genuine Suzuki oil ensures optimal protection for subsequent operation
- Boats and vessels equipped with Suzuki motors used for fishing, watersports, or commercial purposes, where drivetrain reliability is critical
- Compatible with lower units of some other outboard brands that call for SAE 90 GL-5 (always check manufacturer recommendations) – preferred by technicians for its high EP performance
Change & Maintenance Instructions:
- Warm up the engine to operating temperature (e.g., after a short run) before draining old oil – warm oil drains more easily and carries more impurities out.
- Position a drain pan and remove the lower drain plug of the gearcase, then remove the upper vent plug to allow oil to flow. Let it drain completely.
- Inspect the drained oil for water (milky appearance) or metal shavings. A small amount of fine metallic powder is normal, but chips indicate wear. Consult a technician if needed.
- Refill the gearcase from the bottom up using a gear oil pump – attach the pump to the lower drain hole and pump Suzuki Marine Gear Oil 90 until it begins to seep out of the upper vent hole. This technique avoids air pockets.
- Install the upper vent plug (with a new gasket/O-ring if provided) and quickly remove the fill pump, then install the lower drain plug (with new gasket). Wipe away any excess oil.
- Dispose of the used oil according to local environmental regulations. Check for leaks around the plugs the next day.
- Important: Do not mix different types/brands of gear oil – a complete drain and refill with Suzuki Marine Gear Oil 90 is recommended to ensure compatibility and performance.
- Periodically check the gear oil level and condition (e.g., via the inspection plug) – clear golden/brown oil is normal, whereas a milky color indicates water ingress and the need for oil change and seal inspection.
