This manual bilge pump is a dependable solution for removing unwanted water from the bilge or other areas of a boat without the need for power. It enables quick dewatering in emergency situations or when an automatic electric pump is unavailable or overwhelmed.
The pump comes in three different lengths to meet the needs of various vessels:
- 390 mm model (short) – The most compact version, suitable for very small boats, inflatables, or shallow compartments. Its short length makes it easy to stow and convenient to carry as part of an emergency kit. Ideal for tiny craft (~10–16 ft) or use in confined spaces
- 550 mm model (medium) – The versatile standard length, appropriate for most medium-sized boats (~16–23 ft). It offers greater pumping volume per stroke than the 390 mm version while remaining manageable by one person. This is a popular choice as a backup pump aboard fishing boats and day cruisers
- 1000 mm model (long) – The extended version intended for large boats and yachts (over ~23–26 ft) or particularly deep bilge areas. The long barrel allows reaching water that’s far down and provides a longer stroke, meaning more water is expelled with each pump cycle. It’s ideal when you need to remove large amounts of water quickly (for example, in the event of significant hull breach or flooding)
All versions share the same cylinder diameter of 44 mm, so the pumping capacity per stroke is similar, with the main difference being the stroke length. Each model comes equipped with a flexible hose (~95 cm) to direct the discharged water away – you can lead it overboard or to an appropriate drain point so that water does not spill back into the boat. The pump features a convenient T-shaped handle with an ergonomic grip, allowing effective pumping with minimal hand fatigue. The sturdy plastic construction (usually ABS or PVC) of the cylinder and piston is resistant to saltwater and corrosion, ensuring the device will last a long time even with regular use.
Usage and recommendations:
- Always keep at least one manual pump on board as a backup means of dewatering, even if your boat has an electric bilge pump. A hand pump works independently of electrical systems and can be a lifesaver if your electronics fail or the battery is dead
- 390 mm model – Great for very small boats where storage space is tight (e.g., dinghies, kayaks, small skiffs). It’s also handy to carry as a personal emergency pump during water sports or for a dinghy
- 550 mm model – Recommended for most standard powerboats and smaller yachts; it strikes a good balance between compactness and performance. It can double as a general-purpose portable pump too – for instance, pumping out barrels, sumps, or other containers on land
- 1000 mm model – Intended for large yachts, sailboats, and commercial vessels. Thanks to its length, one can operate this pump from the deck while reaching deep into the bilge. It’s suitable for professional rescue crews and onboard emergency teams where significant manual pumping capacity is required
- After use, rinse the pump with fresh water to remove salt and debris, and let it dry before storage. This prevents corrosion of any metal parts and prolongs the life of the seals
- Store the pump in an easily accessible location. In an emergency, every second counts – the crew should be able to quickly find and deploy the manual pump. Make sure everyone on board knows where the emergency pump is kept and how to use it
