The Danforth anchor is one of the most trusted lightweight anchors, known for its high holding power-to-weight ratio. It has a design featuring a pair of wide flat flukes hinged to a long shank, and a stabilizing crossbar (stock) at the crown. Upon dropping, the flukes tilt down into the bottom and bury deeply, creating a very secure grip, especially in soft bottoms like sand or mud. Once set, a properly sized Danforth anchor can withstand significant pull forces, keeping your boat safely moored. Made from sturdy steel and hot-dip galvanized for protection, our Danforth anchors resist rust and maintain their strength season after season. They are easy to handle due to their relatively light weight and can often be disassembled or laid flat for convenient storage. This makes them popular not only as primary anchors on small and mid-sized boats, but also as spare or storm anchors on larger vessels. Note that Danforth anchors perform best in sand and mud; in heavy grass, rocky, or coral bottoms they may not set as effectively. However, for the vast majority of typical anchoring situations, the Danforth’s quick setting and reliability make it a classic choice. From calm coves to breezy afternoons, the Danforth anchor helps ensure that your boat stays put with confidence.
