When your boat’s systems require drawing water from outside, you want that water to be as clean as possible – that’s where these intake strainer thru-hulls come in. Often referred to as Kingston strainers (a nod to traditional seacock nomenclature), they combine a thru-hull and an external strainer in one unit. The external scoop or strainer plate is streamlined and usually oriented facing forward (especially the scoop type for engine intakes) to assist with forcing water into the intake when the boat is moving. It has a series of machined slots or holes that let ample water flow through but screen out larger particles like seaweed, leaves, or jellyfish that could clog your cooling system. Underneath, the fitting is essentially a threaded thru-hull; it passes through the hull and tightens with a backing nut inside. You’d bed it with marine sealant for a watertight seal. Inside, you will typically attach a seacock directly onto the male threads – this is crucial for any intake below the waterline, so you can shut off the flow if needed (for maintenance or in an emergency). From the seacock, a hose leads to your engine or pump. These particular strainers, made of 316 stainless steel, are exceptionally durable: they resist electrolysis and will not suffer from the dezincification issues that bronze can in certain conditions. They can be used for main engine raw water intakes, generator cooling water, high-capacity livewell or washdown pumps, and air conditioning systems. The range of sizes (3/8" up to 1-1/2") means there’s an option for anything from a small genset to a large inboard engine. For example, a diesel engine might use a 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" intake strainer scoop, whereas a baitwell pump might only need a 3/4" strainer. Performance and maintenance: The scooped design can boost water flow at speed, ensuring the engine doesn’t starve for cooling water. When idling or stationary, water still flows freely through the openings. It’s wise to inspect the strainer openings periodically – they can be cleaned with a brush or pick from outside if minor growth appears. Unlike plastic strainers, these won’t warp or get brittle; and unlike bronze, they won’t leave staining on the hull. They also blend nicely with modern stainless steel hull fittings. By installing stainless intake strainers, you provide the best protection to your expensive engines and pumps, reducing the risk of overheating due to clogs. It’s a smart, professional upgrade for any critical seawater intake on your vessel.
