This double block is engineered for serious loads and demanding marine tasks. With two stainless steel sheaves working together, it enables the creation of a powerful pulley system (block-and-tackle) that drastically reduces the effort needed to hoist sails, dinghies, or other heavy equipment. The block’s housing and sheaves are made from polished stainless steel, giving it the robustness to withstand high tension and the environmental resistance to last in saltwater conditions. Unlike blocks with a fixed eye, this model includes a built-in swivel at the top. The swivel eye rotates a full 360°, allowing the block to self-align with the direction of pull. This prevents the lines from twisting when you’re using multiple rope parts, which is crucial for maintaining smooth and safe operation in a double-block setup.
Three sizes are offered to accommodate different needs:
- The small double block (code 01476-25) suits ropes of ~8–10mm and can handle around 2000kg of max load. It’s ideal for mid-sized sailing yachts – for example, as part of a boom vang system or mainsheet tackle on a boat around 8–10m in length.
- The medium block (01476-32) is for 10–12mm ropes, with a capacity up to ~2300kg. It’s often used on larger yachts or for applications like halyard tension systems, davits for dinghy lifting, or multi-part lifting of gear and sails.
- The large double block (01476-50) accepts 12–14mm lines and boasts roughly a 3400kg capacity, making it excellent for very large yachts, main halyard purchase systems on tall ships, heavy gangway lifts, or even industrial marine tasks.
Each of these blocks features a smoothly swiveling eye and freely turning sheaves that minimize friction on the lines. When rigged properly (usually paired with another double or a single block), they multiply your pulling power significantly, enabling a single person to manage loads that would otherwise be difficult to handle. Used in both sailing and commercial operations, the stainless double blocks with swivels are a top-tier choice for reliability, power, and safety.
- Multi-Part Tackle: Use as part of a double-block tackle system to reduce the force needed – e.g., for hoisting sails, lifting dinghies, or heavy objects, effectively halving or quartering the required effort.
- Recommended Use: Large sailing yachts, cruising boats, and commercial vessels where handling high-load lines is routine (for instance, for bow thruster rigs, heavy sheets, or cargo net lifts).
- Swivel Advantage: The rotating eye prevents rope binding even as the pull angle changes – critical when using cranes, winches, or davits to lower or raise loads.
- Safety: Always choose blocks with adequate size/capacity and ensure strong anchor points. Under intense use, periodically inspect the swivel and the sheave pins for wear or deformation.
