The Pro Power Q inverter series is designed to deliver maximum utility at a minimum cost. They output a modified sine wave – a stepped approximation of a pure sine wave. While not as perfect as a true sine, this output is suitable for the vast majority of electrical devices. The result is that these inverters cost considerably less, yet still let you power almost everything on your boat or camper: phone and laptop chargers, LED TVs, fans, pumps, small kitchen appliances like microwaves and electric cooktops, coffee makers, hairdryers (at lower settings), and more. Only devices that explicitly require a pure sine wave are not recommended – for example, washing machines with electronic controls, certain medical equipment, or specific audio gear that might hum on a modified wave. For those scenarios, a pure sine inverter (see Pro Power SB series) would be necessary. But for everything else, Pro Power Q gets the job done admirably.
One of the big advantages of Pro Power Q is its affordability. If you’re on a tight budget or your need for AC power on board is occasional (say only on weekends or evenings), investing in a modified sine wave inverter makes a lot of sense. You’ll get decent performance without paying extra for features you might not need. In fact, in practical use, over 90% of users would hardly notice a difference – your coffee maker will brew coffee, your laptop will charge, your fan will cool the cabin – just as if you were plugged into the grid.
Output Versatility: These inverters come equipped with a combination of outlets, which is especially handy for travelers. For instance, on the front panel you’ll typically find a standard Schuko outlet (Type F) for 230V/50Hz used in most of Europe, as well as a universal socket that can accept UK or US type plugs. If needed, some models even allow switching or using a 110V output (50Hz) – for example, if you have appliances from the US that can tolerate 50Hz frequency. Note that the output frequency is fixed at 50Hz (European standard); most 60Hz-rated devices will still run, albeit possibly at slightly reduced performance (for example, a 60Hz motor might run ~17% slower on 50Hz). For the majority of electronics (power adapters, chargers), this is not an issue at all.
Economy Mode & Cooling: The Pro Power Q series is engineered with energy efficiency in mind during no-load or light-load conditions. The inverter can automatically step into a low-consumption standby mode when no devices are drawing power – so it doesn’t unnecessarily drain your battery. Under small loads, the control circuitry also manages the fan speed: it either spins very slowly or not at all, making the unit nearly silent at night or when only minor loads are present (like a few LED lights). When the load increases (you switch on a microwave or a tool), the fan will ramp up to provide adequate cooling. The noise from the fan is akin to a computer fan or a small desk fan – generally unobtrusive, especially in an open-air environment.
Reliability: Despite being budget-friendly, the Pro Power Q inverters include all the important protections. They feature:
- Overload Protection: If you try to run a device that exceeds the inverter’s capacity, it will automatically shut down rather than blow or damage the device.
- Short-Circuit Protection: In case of an output short circuit, the unit immediately trips off.
- Low Battery Voltage Cut-off: When your battery voltage drops too low (around 10.5V for a 12V system), the inverter will shut down to prevent overly deep discharge of your battery (which can damage the battery).
- Over-Voltage Protection: If the input battery voltage goes too high (for example, due to an alternator overcharging above ~15V), the inverter will turn off to protect its internal electronics.
- Thermal Protection: If the inverter’s internal temperature climbs too high, it will shut down until it cools, preventing damage from overheating.
Choosing a Model & Applications:
- 150W – 300W Models: Great for small tasks – charging phones, tablets, camera gear, running a Wi-Fi router, a small fan, a portable car fridge, etc. These small inverters often come with a cigarette lighter plug, meaning you can use them without a complex install – just plug into a 12V lighter socket on your boat or car. They’re perfect for small boats, fishing trips, or campervans where you need something compact and portable for light-duty AC power.
- 500W – 800W Models: Mid-range, capable of handling more serious items: a TV, a larger laptop or a game console, a desk lamp, a small vacuum cleaner, or power tools like a drill of moderate power. For example, a 600W-800W inverter can typically run a microwave oven (~600W) or an electric kettle (~700W), albeit at the upper limit of its capability. This class is ideal for family boats or RVs where some comforts are desired (warm meal, hot drink, entertainment) without having to invest in high-end equipment.
- 1000W – 2000W Models: Now you’re into the high end of the Pro Power Q range. A 1000W modified sine inverter can power most kitchen appliances on a boat – from a toaster to a small cooker. The 1500-2000W models allow operation of power tools (grinders, electric saws) or even a small air conditioner (a portable unit or a low-power built-in AC on its lowest setting). Naturally, at these power levels you should have a sufficiently large battery bank, because the current draw on the 12V side will be substantial (e.g., ~120A draw for 1500W output). These larger models are installed permanently near the batteries, with thick cables and usually with an external fuse/breaker for added safety.
The Pro Power Q series gives you a lot of flexibility – you can start with a smaller unit and upgrade to a larger one as needed, since the cost is manageable. For users who don’t have to power any particularly sensitive electronic gear, these inverters can perform admirably for years, providing electricity for convenience and comfort during voyages or road trips.
