The “Reef” folding anchor is a popular solution for small craft thanks to its practicality and versatility. Also known as an “umbrella” anchor due to its shape when deployed, it provides good holding power in a variety of conditions – whether on rocky, sandy, or muddy bottoms. When you drop the anchor, its four flukes (prongs) automatically fan out and lock in place, grabbing onto the bottom to prevent drift. The larger sizes (such as 2.6 kg and 3.8 kg) even feature 5 tines for increased holding surface and stability.
Advantage of hot-dip galvanized steel: This type of coating covers every corner and crevice of the anchor, providing complete rust protection. This is especially important for folding mechanisms – the hinge and locking collar, which experience movement and friction. The galvanized finish ensures the anchor will maintain its functionality and smooth folding/unfolding even after repeated use in saltwater.
Size Variants & Boat Recommendations:
- 0.6 kg: The smallest size with 4 prongs (6 mm thick each), suitable for kayaks, canoes, and very small inflatables up to ~2.5-3 meters (8-10 feet). It’s ultra-portable (weighs about as much as a bottle of water) and perfect for temporary anchoring while fishing or taking a break.
- 1.2 kg: A step up, ideal for small dinghies, RIBs, or jet skis around 3-4 m (10-13 ft). Provides better hold in light waves or current.
- 2.0 kg: A general-purpose model with 4 prongs (10 mm thick), good for 4-5 m boats (small fishing boats, larger inflatables). It offers reliable grip even in a bit windier conditions for this class of vessel.
- 2.6 kg: A heavier variant with 5 prongs (10 mm), offering increased contact – recommended for boats ~5-6 m (16-20 ft) or as a secondary anchor on larger boats.
- 3.2 kg: (In some catalogs, 3.2 kg comes with 4 prongs of 12 mm diameter) – suited for 6-7 m boats (20-23 ft, e.g., day-sailers). This size holds confidently in moderate conditions.
- 3.8 kg: The largest of the Reef series, with 5 prongs (12 mm thick each) – intended for boats around 7 m (23 ft) or as a backup/kedge anchor for bigger vessels. It provides maximum holding among “umbrella” style anchors.
Usage: Operating the folding anchor is straightforward – spread the flukes and slide the locking sleeve down the shank to secure the anchor in the open position. After use, pull the sleeve up and fold the flukes against the shank; the anchor then becomes a compact bundle, easy to stow even in tight lockers or bags. Practical applications: It’s ideal for anchoring in shallow areas, calm coves, for a quick swim stop or picnic. Many water sports enthusiasts (e.g., jet skiers, kayakers) favor it for its low weight and bulk.
It’s important to note that due to its lighter weight, this anchor is most effective in mild to moderate conditions. In stronger winds or currents, or for larger boats, a heavier or different style anchor is recommended. Nevertheless, within its intended class, the “Reef” anchor offers an excellent balance of portability and reliability, at an affordable price and with minimal maintenance (just rinse with fresh water after use to wash off salt and sand). It’s a great choice as your primary anchor for small craft or as a secondary/emergency anchor on board.
