Sea-Line Yacht Varnish 1K is a high-quality clear varnish based on synthetic resins, designed for wooden components of boats and yachts. As a single-component product, it dries by solvent evaporation, which makes it very user-friendly – simply stir it well and apply, with no need for mixing in a hardener. This varnish is specifically engineered for exterior and interior applications above the waterline, providing reliable protection and a beautiful finish.
Key advantages of Sea-Line 1K Varnish include its excellent flow and self-leveling properties. When applied, it forms a uniform film with a mirror-like high gloss, free of brush or roller marks. The built-in UV inhibitors protect the wood and the varnish itself from the harmful effects of sunlight – ensuring the coating does not yellow or crack over time. The varnish is also durable in the marine environment: it shields against moisture, salty spray, and temperature fluctuations, yet remains elastic enough to avoid cracking as the wood expands or contracts.
Sea-Line Yacht Varnish 1K is very versatile in its usage. For renewing previously varnished wood, often a light sanding of the old finish followed by 1–3 coats of this varnish is sufficient to restore gloss and protection. For new, bare wood, it’s recommended to apply the first coat thinned (for example, ~10-15% with Sea-Line 1K Thinner) so it can penetrate deeply as a sealing primer. Then apply several additional unthinned coats (typically a total of 4-5 coats on new wood) to build up the desired film thickness and shine.
A notable characteristic of this varnish is that it does not alter the wood’s natural color – once cured, the wood retains its authentic hue, only enhanced by a richer contrast and sheen. It doesn’t impart an orange or dark tint that some traditional varnishes do. This makes it ideal for valuable or decorative woods where maintaining the original look is important.
Application and recommendations:
- Above-Waterline Woodwork: Perfect for varnishing decking, handrails, tillers, wooden masts, as well as cockpit and cabin woodwork. It protects these surfaces from wear and imparts a luxurious gloss. Inside the yacht (cabins, salons), it provides a beautiful finish on paneling, ceilings, and trim as well.
- Number of Coats: For refreshing an old varnish surface – typically 2–3 coats are sufficient (after sanding the old varnish). For new wood – 4 to 5 coats are recommended for maximum protection and depth. Example: On new teak rails, apply 1 thinned coat to seal + 4 full coats of varnish.
- Recoating Interval & Sanding: Allow each coat to dry at least 16 hours at 20°C. Before applying the next coat, lightly sand the surface with fine sandpaper (e.g., P320-P400) to promote adhesion and achieve a perfectly smooth result. Remove all dust before applying the subsequent layer.
- Compatibility & Base Coats: This varnish adheres well over Sea-Line 1K Universal Primer (if one is used as an undercoat) or directly onto clean bare wood. It should not be applied over unsanded 2K coatings or oil-saturated woods, as adhesion issues can occur. If the wood is oily (like teak), make sure to degrease it and consider using a suitable primer or a thinned first coat to ensure proper bonding.
