The Marinco 32A/230V shore power inlet with a Valox housing offers the trusted quality of Marinco with reduced weight and cost, thanks to its high-grade plastic construction. Valox is a type of engineered thermoplastic resin known for its strength, weather resistance, and flame retardant properties. Unlike a metal flange, a plastic one will not corrode or cause galvanic issues when mounted on aluminum or steel surfaces – a significant advantage in the marine environment.
This inlet provides a standard 32A single-phase feed at 230V, which is widely used for boats and RVs in Europe. By design, it can also handle 50A at 110V (an equivalent load), making it versatile for different electrical systems. Inside, there are three solid contacts (male prongs) with nickel plating awaiting the shore power plug. When you connect the cord’s plug, its threaded collar screws onto the plastic neck of the inlet, creating a secure attachment. Although the flange is plastic and lightweight, the design is robust enough to withstand the mechanical stress of tightening and any vibrations in use.
The face lid of this inlet is also made of Valox plastic and is spring-loaded. When the plug is removed, the lid snaps shut automatically. A rubber gasket under the lid prevents water ingress – with the lid closed, the inlet is safe even in foul weather (rated roughly up to IP56). Installation requires cutting a standard hole in the boat’s hull or panel; the plastic flange has four screw holes to secure it firmly. On the interior, the inlet provides color-coded screw terminals – live (L), neutral (N), and ground (PE), making it straightforward to integrate with the existing wiring.
Applications & Notes:
- Boats, RVs, Floating Homes: This plastic inlet is great for installation on power and sail boats up to ~45 feet, trailers/campers, or even stationary houseboats where shore power is needed but a stainless steel unit isn’t mandatory. Its lighter weight and insulating properties can be beneficial in these scenarios.
- Electrical Insulation: The plastic housing also acts as an insulator, meaning it reduces the risk of stray currents and galvanic corrosion – an important factor for metal-hulled boats. This adds a level of safety, as the flange itself is non-conductive.
- Upgradability: Should you decide later to upgrade to a stainless steel inlet, the Marinco 32A stainless model (code 14.487.03) shares the same dimensions and specs, so the swap is easy. Conversely, this plastic model can replace a stainless one in case of damage or for a budget-friendly solution, without any modifications to the boat.
- Maintenance: Valox plastic is very durable, but check the lid’s gasket about once a year – it should remain soft and pliable. If the lid starts closing more slowly, the spring might need cleaning from salt or grime. Simply rinse thoroughly with fresh water and apply a bit of silicone lubricant to the hinge to restore smooth action.
- Appearance: The white/light-grey color of Valox (or other tint it may come in) is unobtrusive and matches various hull colors. While it isn’t shiny like stainless, it presents a neat look and will not rust or discolor over time.
