This reinforced fuel primer bulb is built to withstand harsh conditions and extended use in the marine environment. Its body is made from multi-layer PVC reinforced with an internal fiber mesh, giving it extra strength against swelling and cracking. This sets it apart from standard primers – the heavy-duty construction ensures a longer lifespan and reliable performance even when used with modern ethanol-blended fuels.
The bulb comes in two sizes – for hoses with 8 mm and 9.5 mm inner diameter (5/16″ and 3/8″). These cover most outboard engine fuel systems and inboard generator lines. Installation is straightforward: simply splice the bulb into the fuel hose between the tank and engine, making sure the arrow on the bulb (indicating flow direction) points toward the engine. Secure the hoses to the bulb’s end barbs with clamps to prevent leaks.
Inside the primer are two check valves – one at each end – that ensure fuel flows in one direction only. With each squeeze, fuel is pushed toward the engine, and as you release, the valves prevent it from flowing back toward the tank. This effectively purges air from the system and fills the fuel line with liquid. Only a few squeezes are usually needed to deliver fuel into the carburetor or fuel rail, making engine starting much easier, especially after long storage.
The reinforced bulb is resistant to temperature extremes and UV rays, which is crucial for components installed in exposed cockpits or engine bays. The PVC material stays pliable in cold weather (the bulb won’t become too stiff) and withstands heat without becoming overly soft or emitting fuel odor. The valves are made of corrosion-resistant materials, ensuring they remain sealed and functional over time. This primer is particularly handy for initial startups at the beginning of the season, after refueling or filter changes, and as a backup if your engine’s automatic priming system fails. With this bulb, you can confidently start your engine every time, knowing that fuel is delivered quickly and safely where it’s needed.
