Lewmar bow thruster kits offer an all-in-one solution for boat owners looking to install a bow thruster or upgrade an existing one, with the confidence that all components are matched and compatible. Each kit is assembled by the manufacturer with correctly sized parts, saving you time and complexity compared to sourcing individual items.

What’s Included in the Kit:

  • Bow Thruster Unit: The thruster motor/propeller assembly itself (electric motor with gearleg and propeller(s)), selected for the specific kit’s power. It comes ready to mount into the tunnel. For example, a 2 kW kit includes the Lewmar 140TT thruster (2.0 kW motor, ~35 kgf thrust capability).
  • Fiberglass Tunnel: A correctly sized tunnel of appropriate diameter and length for the thruster, included for hull installation. For instance, the 2 kW kit provides a Ø140 mm fiberglass tunnel about 0.75 m long, which is ideal for that thruster’s propeller size and typical bow thickness. The tunnel may come pre-trimmed or with guidelines for cutting to fit.
  • Control Panel: A Lewmar thruster control panel (either a joystick or button pad type) with all necessary mounting hardware (gasket, screws). Typically, these kits include the standard Lewmar joystick control with built-in on/off and LED status lights, which is intuitive and compact for most helm stations.
  • Wiring Loom: A pre-cut length of wiring harness to connect the thruster to the control panel and power source (usually around 7 meters, which suffices for many installations). It comes with plug-and-play connectors, so you simply plug one end into the thruster unit and the other into the control panel (and battery connection), with no need for custom crimping.
  • Electrical Protection Components: A main fuse or circuit breaker of the appropriate amperage for the thruster motor, as well as a heavy-duty battery isolation switch (master on/off switch) for the thruster’s power circuit. These ensure the system is safely protected against overcurrent and can be turned off when not in use. The kit also includes the fuse holder and any necessary terminal lugs or mounting bolts for these safety components.
  • Mounting Hardware & Instructions: All required nuts, bolts, and brackets to mount the thruster in the tunnel and secure the tunnel in the hull are provided. Detailed installation instructions and wiring diagrams are included, guiding you on where to position each component and how to properly fiberglass the tunnel into the bow. The manual also gives helpful tips (like correct tunnel placement and alignment) to guarantee optimal performance.

Advantages of a Complete Kit:

  • Guaranteed Compatibility: All parts come from Lewmar and are designed to work together seamlessly. There’s no guesswork about choosing the right size tunnel or correct electrical components – the kit ensures, for example, that the 2 kW thruster is paired with the precise tunnel diameter for peak performance and that the control panel and electrical kit are appropriately rated.
  • Ease of Installation: By having everything in one package, the installation process is streamlined. You don’t have to hunt for missing pieces or worry about custom fabrication. Simply install the tunnel as instructed, bolt in the thruster unit, connect the wiring harness, and you’re nearly done. Every cable and connector is labeled and pre-fitted, which reduces installation time and the potential for wiring errors. Even if you’re hiring a marine technician for the install, having a complete kit can lower labor hours and ensures nothing critical is overlooked.
  • Optimized Performance: When Lewmar assembles a kit, they ensure the thruster will operate under ideal conditions – the tunnel is of the correct length (preventing thrust loss from a too-short or too-narrow tunnel), the fuse and breaker are properly sized (to protect the motor without nuisance trips), and the wiring is of correct gauge (preventing voltage drop and ensuring full power delivery). As a result, your boat gets the maximum benefit from the thruster’s capabilities.
  • Different Kits for Different Boats: For example:
    • 1.5 kW Kit (Part No. 02.042.29): Includes the 110TT 1.5 kW thruster, a Ø125/140 mm tunnel (0.75 m length), control panel, wiring, and electrical kit. This is perfect for 5–7 meter boats – such as small cabin cruisers, RIBs, or fishing boats – where a compact thruster greatly aids in docking. It adds confidence in tight marinas for smaller craft that might otherwise struggle with wind or current.
    • 2.0 kW Kit (Part No. 02.042.30 or 02.052.25): Contains the 140TT 2.0 kW thruster (~35 kgf thrust), a Ø140 mm tunnel 0.75 m, plus all controls and wiring. Aimed at the very common 6–9 m (20–30 ft) boat range, this kit is one of the most popular as it fits many production sailboats and motorboats. It offers these vessels a dramatic improvement in maneuverability, making docking much less stressful.
    • 3.0 kW Kit (Part No. 02.052.31): Includes the 185TT 3.0 kW thruster (~58 kgf thrust), a Ø185 mm tunnel 1.0 m, with full installation kit. Designed for 9–12 m boats (30–40 ft), this package gives powerful assistance in holding or moving the bow in strong winds, which is especially beneficial for single-screw boats or sailboats. With this kit, a 35-foot yacht can be docked single-handedly with ease, even in challenging conditions.

Each package comes with Lewmar’s manufacturer warranty and the backing of their global support network, giving you peace of mind in your thruster investment. Lewmar complete thruster kits have been pre-tested as a system – from the box to your boat – to ensure that once installed, everything works together flawlessly on the first try.
