This luxury stainless steel flagstaff is designed for discerning yacht owners who seek both strength and style. It is made from premium AISI 316 steel, renowned for its excellent corrosion resistance – perfect for use in salty marine conditions. The mirror polishing of its surface gives it a dazzling shine that complements other chrome and stainless fittings on your boat, and makes the staff easy to clean (salt and water spots wipe off effortlessly).

One distinctive feature of this model is its wing-shaped cross-section. Instead of a standard cylindrical shape, the flagstaff has a flattened, aerodynamic profile (cross-section approximately 38x24 mm for the 610/750 mm lengths and 45x29 mm for the 900 mm length). This shape provides several advantages:

  • It prevents the flagstaff from rotating freely in its socket – once mounted, your flag will remain oriented steadily aft (or in the set direction) rather than spinning around in the wind.
  • It increases rigidity and strength – the wing-like profile has greater resistance to bending in the direction of the wind, meaning less flex and vibration under strong gusts.
  • It reduces air drag and noise – the aero profile minimizes whistling, which sometimes occurs with round poles at certain wind speeds.

Mounting the flagstaff is made easy with the bayonet locking system. The base (sold separately, typically mounted on the stern or rail of the yacht) has a corresponding socket with a locking mechanism. To install the flagstaff, you insert its bottom end into the socket and give it about a 90° twist – special locking pins engage in slots and lock the staff firmly in place. This patented system (by Osculati) ensures a secure fit with no wobble or play. Removing the staff is just as simple – a reverse twist unlocks it and you can pull it out. This is convenient for stowing the flag at the end of the day or when covering the boat, when the staff might be in the way. The flagstaff is compatible with bases such as Osculati part 35.390.20 (for the 610 mm) and 35.390.25 (for the 750/900 mm), which typically have a standard ~30° angle for mounting on the stern deck.

There are three sizes of this flagstaff available to meet the needs of different vessels:

  • 610 mm length – suitable for smaller vessels (e.g., motorboats, fishing boats, sailboats up to ~6–7 m) and for smaller flags (typically up to about 30x40 cm in flag size).
  • 750 mm length – a universal medium size often used on yachts around 8–10 m. It can carry medium flags (around 40x60 cm) and provides a bit more height for better flag visibility above railings.
  • 900 mm length – intended for larger yachts (over 10 m), where the taller staff matches the scale of the vessel and allows flying larger flags (~50x75 cm or similar) prominently.

Each flagstaff comes equipped with the necessary hardware for attaching your flag. There are sliding rings (usually two) made of stainless steel: one near the top and one near the bottom of the staff, which can be adjusted to the flag’s spacing and are used to clip or tie the flag onto the staff. This keeps the flag taut and secured, preventing it from sliding up or down. At the tip of the staff is a decorative finial – on this model, it’s a polished stainless steel ball that provides a finished look and also stops the top ring from slipping off. The construction of the entire flagstaff is extremely robust – when the flag is properly attached, the staff can handle the wind load and air pressure from high-speed cruising without dangerous flex or oscillation.

  • Mounting Base: To use this flagstaff, you will need a suitable base (holder), typically installed on the stern or rail at about a 30° angle. If your boat doesn’t have one, we offer compatible stainless steel bases separately. When installing, ensure the bayonet mechanism is fully engaged (you’ll feel it click or stop). A correctly locked flagstaff will not wiggle or come loose even under motion.
  • Usage: This flagstaff is ideal for flying your national ensign at the stern – an element that adds a prestigious and nautical character to your yacht. It can also be used for club burgees, company flags, regatta flags, or various signal flags when you want them to be displayed clearly and stably. The wing-shaped staff keeps flags orderly and visible even at speed.
  • Maintenance: Although AISI 316 stainless is highly resistant, it’s recommended to rinse the flagstaff with fresh water after prolonged use to remove salt deposits, and occasionally polish it with a soft cloth or metal polish to maintain its mirror shine. During winter lay-up or long periods of disuse, you can detach the staff (thanks to the quick bayonet release) and store it in a dry, clean place. This will preserve its finish and prevent any accidental damage.
  • Safety Consideration: In case of very high winds or storms, or when you know the boat will encounter extreme conditions, it’s advisable to temporarily remove the flagstaff (and flag) – this prevents any risk of damage to the staff itself, the flag, or the base under extreme stress. Removal is quick, so you can easily stow the equipment safely until the bad weather passes.
