This 90-degree fuel tank vent is a key component for the proper functioning of any boat’s fuel system. Mounted on the hull or deck, the vent continuously allows the tank to breathe: when the engine is running and fuel is being consumed, air enters to prevent vacuum formation, and when refueling, it lets out air and fuel vapors to avoid back pressure. The polypropylene body is resistant to fuels (gasoline, diesel) and will not crack or degrade from contact with them. The elbow shape (90°) of the vent is designed so that its outlet points downward – this prevents rain or wave water from easily entering the hose. The exterior ring is made of AISI 316 stainless steel, giving a clean, finished look to the deck installation while also providing extra reinforcement around the opening. This ring is polished smooth, which prevents snags on ropes or injury if stepped on. The vent is offered in four common diameters corresponding to the most used fuel hoses – 19 mm, 25.4 mm, 28.5 mm, and 38 mm – covering the range from small petrol tanks up to large diesel tanks on yachts.
- Safe Refueling: During fast refueling, this vent allows excess air and vapors to escape outwards instead of building pressure that could cause fuel to "burp" back out of the filler. This minimizes the risk of fuel spills on the deck or into the water, protecting both the boat and the environment.
- Prevents Vacuum Lock: As the engine runs and fuel is drawn from the tank, empty space is created that needs to be filled with air. This vent ensures a smooth inflow of air so a vacuum does not form, which could impede fuel flow to the engine (a phenomenon known as fuel starvation).
- Easy Installation & Maintenance: Installation requires drilling an appropriate hole and inserting the vent, then tightening the back nut from the inside. A rubber O-ring gasket is included to ensure a watertight seal. Once installed, the vent requires virtually no servicing – its opening is broad and can easily be rinsed with water to clear any salt crystals or debris.
- Versatile Use: Although primarily intended for fuel tanks, this type of vent can also be used to ventilate other onboard tanks – e.g., fresh water tanks, grey/black water holding tanks – anywhere a 90° vented thru-hull with a high-quality finish is needed. The stainless steel ring ensures that the boat’s exterior appearance remains polished, no matter the application.
