The replacement filter element 04487-2 is designed specifically for Yamaha-type fuel separators with a clear bowl, which use a mini 10-micron filter. These separators are often installed on boats with Yamaha engines (and not only Yamaha, since the design is quite universal). During routine maintenance or when a clogging indication occurs, replacing the filter element is a quick way to restore normal fuel flow.

Features and usage:

  • Compatibility with Yamaha/EVAL clear bowls: The 04487-2 element is intended to be installed inside the transparent cup of separator systems with code 04487. Such systems typically feature a see-through bowl, allowing visual inspection for water. If you have a filter assembly with a small clear bowl at the bottom – for example, a Yamaha Mini-10 or equivalent – this spare element is the correct choice. It fits neatly into the bowl and attaches to the filter head as the original did.
  • High-efficiency filtration in a small package: Despite its compact size, the 04487-2 filter offers 10-micron filtration, meaning it catches very fine particles in the fuel. Multiple layers of filter paper/screen ensure that even fine dust or abrasive particles won’t reach your engine. Additionally, the construction is such that it directs heavy water droplets to the bottom of the bowl, where they can be easily seen and drained. Essentially, you get near OEM performance in a smaller separator unit designed for outboards.
  • When to replace the element: It’s generally recommended in boating to replace separator filter elements once a year (for example, at the start of the season) or sooner if they are found to be dirty. Signs that you need a change can include difficulty getting fuel to the engine, reduced power, or the visual accumulation of sludge/water in the clear bowl. With a 04487-2 on hand, the swap takes only a few minutes – preventing small issues from turning into bigger problems.
  • Replacement procedure: Specific to these filters, you typically should first shut off the incoming fuel flow (if there’s a valve), then unscrew the bottom clear bowl (careful not to spill the fuel inside). The old filter element is inside, often attached to the cap or filter head. Remove it and place the new 04487-2 element in its position. Check the seals – usually there’s an O-ring on the cap and sometimes on the bowl itself – ensure they’re in good shape or replace them if new ones are provided. Screw the bowl back onto the head, tightening firmly by hand. Open the fuel flow and prime the system (some Yamaha filters have a bleed screw for this). Finally, start the engine and check for leaks around the seals. It’s a straightforward process that ensures a proper seal and function.
  • Maintaining the clear bowl: While you’re replacing the element, it’s a good opportunity to clean the clear bowl. Over time, it can accumulate stains or residue from fuel. Clean it with fresh gasoline or an appropriate cleaner so it remains transparent – this way you can continue to visually monitor for water (water droplets appear as bubbles or a separate layer at the bottom distinct from the fuel). A clear bowl only helps if you can see through it, so keeping it clean is part of good maintenance.

By replacing the filter element with a 04487-2, you ensure that your Yamaha separator continues to work like new. This small consumable keeps your larger engine – from a 70 HP outboard to a 250–300 HP V6 – supplied with only clean fuel. Investing in the correct spare parts provides peace of mind and savings in the long run, as it helps prevent damage caused by bad fuel. Keep your separator effective and your engine protected with timely filter changes.
