The Honda Honwave T38-IE3 represents the pinnacle of inflatable boats with air decks – it delivers maximum capacity and dimensions without losing the series’ main advantage: mobility. At nearly 3.8m long and capable of carrying 5 adults plus a child, the T38-IE3 rivals many rigid boats in terms of space, yet it’s astounding in that it can be folded up and put in a vehicle. Its weight of 48 kg is extremely low for these dimensions, meaning two strong individuals can carry and launch it without mechanical assistance.
Once inflated, this boat reveals its true character: its wide beam (1.70 m overall width) and large tubes (44 cm diameter) make it an exceptionally stable platform, resistant to rolling and suitable for moving around on deck. This is especially important for activities like diving – several divers can enter or exit the water from the side without the boat dramatically losing balance. The inflatable keel forms a deep V which allows the boat to cut through waves effectively and behave well in rougher conditions. Of course, with the inflatable floor you also get the added bonus of shock absorption – on long voyages this reduces fatigue, as vibrations from the engine and the chop are partially absorbed by the air cushion of the deck.
The T38-IE3 is built to carry weight. With a payload of nearly 950 kg, this boat can hold not only the passengers but also diving gear (spearguns, tanks, compressors), coolers with catch or provisions, extra fuel, and then some. This opens opportunities for truly autonomous expeditions where you won’t lack any essential gear. Keep in mind that at maximum load, propelling the boat requires power – hence Honda has designed it to accommodate up to a 20 HP engine. With such a motor, the boat, even loaded, manages to move respectably (though it won’t reach the high speeds of lighter-loaded setups). At moderate load (3-4 people), a 15 HP engine can get the boat on plane and achieve speeds over 25 km/h, which is impressive for this class.
Handling the Honwave T38-IE3 remains confident thanks to its design. In turns, the boat responds smoothly, with the large keel preventing excessive skidding. Even in rougher seas, the boat behaves predictably – moreover, the long length helps it bridge waves without hobby-horsing. This model, although inflatable, is rated Category C, meaning it’s certified for coastal use in moderate conditions.
Like the other Honwave boats, the T38-IE3 comes with the standard accessory pack: a carry bag (in this case a bit larger to fit everything), a repair kit, a high-output foot pump with gauge, oars (two-piece in this larger model for convenience), and a bench seat. Even at this size, setup time is not excessive – with the dual-action pump, the tubes and floor inflate relatively quickly. For many, the T38-IE3 is the perfect combination of “big boat, small package” – when you want a serious craft but have no space for a trailer, this is the solution.
Recommended Uses and Tips:
- Diving and research missions – ideal for dive groups or teams investigating coastal waters; carries full gear and provides a stable base for operations in the water
- Professional fishing and seafood harvesting – high capacity for nets, traps, catch, and crew; the boat can operate near shore or in estuaries and haul significant loads back
- Extended family excursions – enables multi-day water journeys with the whole family and camping gear (tents, food, clothing); safe in moderate sea conditions, making it suitable for island hopping or long coastal runs
- Portable work boat – for construction or maintenance tasks around the water (docks, buoys, marine farms) – can ferry tools, materials, and workers and move between job sites
- Recommended engine: 20 HP (maximum) – provides the best performance under full load; 15 HP is an excellent compromise for mixed use, offering a balance of power and economy, especially if the boat isn’t always at capacity
