The Mercury F250 is part of Mercury’s new V8 FourStroke lineup introduced in 2018, sharing the same 4.6-liter architecture as the larger F300. With 250 HP, this engine delivers nearly the same torque and acceleration as the flagship, but in a slightly lower power band – an ideal choice for boats that don’t require the full 300 HP. The F250 provides impressively quick planing and high top-end speed for big boats, all while maintaining the smoothness and quiet operation characteristic of the V8 series. With minimal vibration and noise, the F250 contributes to a comfortable boating experience even at high rpm.
Like the other V8 models, the Mercury F250 is engineered for user-friendliness – it features an integrated top cowl service door for lightning-fast oil checks and refills. Its high-output 85A alternator ensures all your onboard electronics – from navigation systems to sound systems – have ample power during operation. When needed, the idle charge system will automatically boost idle rpm to recharge your batteries. The Mercury F250 can be rigged with either digital or mechanical controls, depending on your boat’s setup, and it comes in both classic black and stylish white finishes.
Weighing around 240–250 kg (depending on shaft length), the F250 is among the lightest 250HP engines on the market. Its compactness and low weight ease installation on tight transoms or when repowering an older boat. This engine is an excellent balance of power and weight – delivering near-maximum thrust without burdening your stern with unnecessary kilograms.
The Mercury F250 suits a wide range of vessels in the ~7–9 meter length range. It provides reliable power for sport boats, larger RIBs, day cruisers, and offshore fishing craft where 225 HP might not be quite enough but 300 HP would be overkill. Twin F250 installations (2 x 250 HP for 500 total HP) are also possible on suitable boats – a setup often seen on mid-sized yachts and cruisers to achieve outstanding performance. With the Mercury F250, you get premium V8 power without going beyond what’s needed – an engine known for its reliability, efficiency, and brawn.
- Excellent as a single engine on boats ~7–9 m, delivering high speed and power without excessively burdening the transom
- Can be twin-mounted (2 x 250 HP) for a total of 500 HP on suitable vessels – a common solution for mid-size yachts and cruisers
- Ideal for powerful RIBs, sport cruisers, and fishing boats that demand a reliable V8 engine with high torque
- Blends premium performance with efficiency – the optimal balance of power and fuel economy in the 250HP class
