The Honda BF2.3D is designed with maximum portability and simplicity in mind. Weighing about 13 kg, this motor is extremely easy to carry and install – it can literally be carried in one hand. Its compact dimensions make it a favorite for very small vessels where every kilogram matters (for example, inflatable dinghies or canoes fitted with a motor bracket).

Unlike most outboards, the BF2.3 is air-cooled – there’s no impeller or water cooling passages to clog with sand or silt. This greatly simplifies maintenance and makes the engine durable for use in shallow waters. With 2.3 HP of output, it can propel a small boat with 1–2 people at a respectable speed (~5–6 knots depending on load) or serve as an emergency engine for maneuvering a sailing yacht.

The BF2.3D features a centrifugal clutch – when the engine is idling, the prop does not spin, which improves safety and convenience when stationary. When you throttle up, the clutch automatically engages and the boat begins moving forward. There is no separate reverse gear – instead, you simply swivel the motor 180° (it can turn a full 360°) to get reverse thrust. Steering is via a tiller handle with a comfortable twist-grip throttle.

The built-in 1.1 L fuel tank provides roughly one hour of operation at full throttle, and at lower speeds the engine can run even longer. Since this engine is 4-stroke, it is much quieter and more eco-friendly than old 2-stroke motors – there’s no smoke, fuel consumption is minimal, and you don’t need to mix oil into the gas. The BF2.3 is a fantastic choice for owners of small boats who want reliability, ease of use, and the freedom to cruise on lakes, ponds, and calm bays.
