The Honda BF10DK2 is engineered to maximize functionality in a portable outboard. With an integrated auto decompression release and digital CDI ignition, this engine can start up to 40% easier – even one-handed. The automatic choke adjusts the fuel-air mix during cold starts based on engine temperature, ensuring a smooth transition from idle to full throttle. A carburetor with an accelerator pump delivers quick throttle response, while a microprocessor precisely controls ignition timing across the rev range for optimal performance.
In its class, the BF10 comes impressively well-equipped: it includes built-in alerts for low oil pressure, an over-rev limiter, and overheating protection – all crucial safeguards to protect the engine and extend its life. Honda’s patented “Double Sealed” multi-layer paint coating, combined with sacrificial anodes and stainless steel components, provides top-notch corrosion resistance for operation in saltwater conditions.
The BF10DK2 features a 12V, 6A charging alternator utilizing a new 12-pole magnet system. It delivers a solid ~6-amp charge even at a low 1000 RPM idle, allowing you to maintain your battery and power electronics (fishfinder, lights, nav equipment) while slow trolling. This ensures the BF10 keeps your onboard battery topped up throughout your trip, regardless of speed.
For portability, the BF10 is designed with an integrated rear carrying handle located at the engine’s balance point. This makes carrying, as well as mounting/dismounting the engine, extremely easy and well-balanced. The BF10 comes with an external 12.5 L fuel tank and all necessary fittings (fuel connector and hose). It runs on regular 95 octane unleaded gasoline. As with all Honda models, the intelligent and simplified controls make operating the BF10 straightforward and pleasant, backed by Honda’s decades of experience as a world leader in 4-stroke engines.
- Variants & Use Cases: Available in short (15″) or long (20″) shaft versions – the short shaft is ideal for small inflatables and jon boats with low transoms, while the long shaft suits taller transoms (e.g., small sailboats). The BF10 comes in both manual and electric start configurations, and there’s even a remote-steering version (BF10 LRU) for console-steered boats. This engine is an excellent choice for inflatable boats ~3.5–4 m, small fishing skiffs, and as an auxiliary “kicker” motor for sailboats. Its light weight and compact size make it easy to transport and store, which is perfect for boaters who frequently change locations or launch their boats solo.
