The Raymarine Type 2/12V mechanical linear drive (short stroke) is built for autopilot systems on larger vessels that demand extra power. With a capacity up to 15,000 kg displacement, it’s ideal for yachts around 50–60 ft in length. The “short stroke” denotes a 300 mm maximum rod travel (same as Type 1) but with a stronger motor and drive gear. The result is a peak thrust of about 480 kgf and a fast hard-over time (~10–12 seconds) – sufficient to maintain course in heavy conditions and execute rapid maneuvers.
Features and advantages:
- Increased power: Type 2 delivers roughly 60% more thrust than Type 1, enabling the autopilot to steer vessels up to 15 tons even in strong winds and seas
- ACU-400 required: due to higher power draw, this drive is used with the Raymarine ACU-400 controller, which provides the necessary current and circuit protection
- Rugged engineering: designed to handle sustained loads – well-suited for long offshore passages and commercial use
- Convenience & safety: the clutch automatically disengages the drive when the autopilot is off, ensuring the steering system remains free for effortless manual helm control
