The Raymarine i40 Depth is a compact digital depth sounder display, offered here as a complete pack with a P7 through-hull transducer. This bundle provides everything needed for reliable depth monitoring under your vessel – from the easy-to-read depth display unit to the quality thru-hull depth sensor that mounts in your boat’s hull.

The i40 Depth is engineered to show clear, immediate readings of the water depth, while also offering important safety features like shallow and deep water alarms. You can set a shallow alarm (for example, when navigating a harbor or shallow bay) and a deep-water alarm if desired; the instrument will then alert you with an audible buzzer and a flashing display when the depth goes above or below those set thresholds. In addition, the i40 Depth logs the minimum depth encountered, so you always know the shoalest water passed during your journey – a valuable piece of information when cruising unfamiliar or variable-depth waters.

Included in this pack is the Raymarine P7 transducer – a plastic through-hull depth sensor designed for permanent installation in the boat’s hull. The low-profile design of the P7 means it sits nearly flush with the hull, reducing turbulence around the sensor and improving accuracy even when the boat is moving at speed. The P7 operates on a standard 200 kHz frequency and is optimized for small to medium vessels with fiberglass or metal hulls. The transducer’s cable plugs directly into the back of the i40 display, delivering analog depth data to the instrument. By installing the transducer through the hull, you gain more reliable readings compared to transom-mounted sensors, especially at higher speeds or in choppy conditions, since the P7 remains in constant contact with the water flow.

The Raymarine i40 Depth display itself features large, high-contrast digits and a simple three-button control scheme, making it easy to operate even in rough seas. The screen’s red backlighting can be enabled for comfortable night-time viewing without compromising your night vision. This is particularly useful for overnight passages or early morning fishing trips, where you need to monitor depth in the dark but want to avoid bright light on the bridge or cockpit.

As with all instruments in the i40 series, the Depth model is designed for low power consumption, an important consideration for smaller boats or sailboats without large battery banks. Despite its compact size (128 x 72 mm front), the unit delivers performance and clarity comparable to larger, more expensive depth systems.

Integration with other equipment on board is straightforward thanks to the built-in SeaTalk networking. The i40 Depth can tie into an existing Raymarine SeaTalk network so that depth information is shared with other devices – for instance, a multi-function display or chartplotter can show depth data, or an autopilot can use the depth info for functions like depth-contour tracking. The instrument can also operate as a repeater display – if your boat already has a depth sounder or fishfinder data available, the i40 Depth can be set to display that same information at a second location (for example, one unit at the helm and another near the navigation station).

Installation of the i40 Depth is primarily intended as a flush mount in a flat surface of your dashboard or instrument panel. The package includes a cutting template, gasket, mounting bracket and hardware, and instructions to help you achieve a quick and watertight installation. Once the appropriately sized hole is cut, the instrument is secured using the included clamp bracket and thumb nuts, compressing the seal for a waterproof fit. For additional flexibility, Raymarine offers an optional bracket mount kit (not included in this pack) which allows you to mount the display externally on a bracket if flush mounting is not practical. This can be useful for installations on pipe railings, overhead instrument pods, or any surface where you prefer an angled bracket mount.

Use Cases: The Raymarine i40 Depth Pack with P7 is optimized for sailboats, small motorboats, and RIBs up to around 25–35 feet (8–10 meters) in length, where a dependable depth gauge with a permanently installed transducer is desired. The through-hull transducer installation provides better accuracy at speed compared to a transom-mount, making this pack especially suitable for boats that frequently operate in shallow waters, rivers, lakes, or coastal areas where knowing the depth is critical. If you have a trailerable boat or prefer not to drill a hole in the hull bottom, Raymarine also offers a variant of this system with a transom-mount sensor (e.g., the i40 Depth with P66 transom transducer, part E70143). In general, the i40 Depth package with P7 delivers professional-grade depth sounder performance in a user-friendly form factor – it’s reliable, easy to use and integrate, and built to withstand marine conditions, giving peace of mind to skippers as they navigate shallow channels or anchor overnight.
