The Raymarine RD424HD is a 24″, 4 kW HD Digital radome scanner designed for boaters who demand superior radar performance. This model (E92143) is the radome only – no interconnect cable is included – which is ideal if you are replacing an older Raymarine radome and plan to reuse or separately purchase a cable of the appropriate length. The RD424HD’s larger antenna and advanced digital processing provide enhanced range (up to 48 nautical miles) and target clarity, giving you a detailed, lifelike radar picture in a compact dome format.
- Radar Performance: With a powerful 4 kW magnetron transmitter and a large 24″ antenna, the RD424HD can detect targets from minimal ranges out to an impressive 48 nm. The larger dome size yields a narrower horizontal beam (3.9°) compared to 18″ radars, resulting in sharper target separation and better resolution at distance. Small contacts like channel markers, skiffs, and even flocks of birds are detected and displayed with remarkable clarity, thanks to the 256-color HD shading and Raymarine’s adaptive digital receiver technology (which automatically adjusts gain and tune for changing conditions).
- Adaptive Modes & Bird Mode: The RD424HD comes with intuitive preset modes that simplify operation: Harbor, Coastal, Offshore, and Buoy modes automatically adjust the radar’s settings for optimal imaging whether you’re in a crowded marina, cruising along the coast, far offshore, or tracking buoy targets. Additionally, a specialized Bird Mode maximizes sensitivity to radar returns from sea bird activity – a feature treasured by anglers to locate feeding birds (and thus fish schools) at distance. These modes take full advantage of the HD digital processing to deliver a clear picture without manual tweaking, though manual controls for gain, sea clutter, and rain clutter remain available for expert users.
- Dual-Range & High Speed Scanning: On compatible multifunction displays (such as Raymarine Axiom or gS Series), the RD424HD supports dual-range operation – effectively acting like two radars in one – allowing you to view a short-range and long-range radar image simultaneously. This means you can keep an eye on immediate hazards around the boat while also monitoring weather or vessel traffic several miles out. The radome also features a high-speed rotation mode (48 RPM) when using short range scales, which provides ultra-fast target updates – very useful for high-speed craft or when navigating in tight quarters among many moving targets.
- MARPA and Tracking: The RD424HD enhances situational awareness with MARPA (Mini Automatic Radar Plotting Aid) target tracking. When connected to a heading sensor and a compatible display, you can acquire up to 10 targets and track their course and speed right on your radar screen. This allows you to quickly identify which targets pose a risk of collision and getCPA/TCPA (closest point of approach / time to CPA) alarms. While it doesn’t have the Doppler color-coding of the Quantum 2, the HD radome’s superior raw resolution and target tracking still provide excellent collision avoidance support for larger voyages or commercial operations.
- Integration & Compatibility: This radar scanner is plug-and-play compatible with Raymarine’s LightHouse II/III and earlier systems. It uses Raymarine’s network interface (SeaTalkHS or RayNet Ethernet) to connect to your MFD. The cable is sold separately – you can select a Raymarine digital radar cable of 5m, 10m, 15m, or 25m, or use an existing cable from a previous analog/HD radome if upgrading (with an adapter if necessary). The RD424HD works with a wide range of displays: from legacy C-Series Widescreen, E-Widescreen, and G-Series, to modern Axiom/Axiom Pro/XL units (via a RayNet cable). It supports features like overlaying radar onto charts, displaying AIS targets on the radar screen, and integration with Raymarine’s thermal cameras through the display’s features. In summary, the RD424HD 24" offers big-radar performance in a radome package – ideal for larger yachts and commercial vessels seeking long-range capability and top-tier target clarity.
