The Raymarine Ray91 combines a powerful multi-station VHF radio with AIS reception, all in one integrated black-box system. Based on the Ray90 platform, the Ray91 inherits the same capabilities: a hidden transceiver unit, included RayMic handset and speaker, 25W transmit power, and full Class D DSC functionality for digital calling. On top of that, the Ray91 has a built-in AIS receiver that constantly monitors the Automatic Identification System broadcasts around you. This means that while you’re communicating over VHF voice, the radio is simultaneously receiving AIS data about nearby vessels and can feed it to your chartplotter or other display. In practice, the Ray91 lets you see the traffic while you talk – increased situational awareness integrated directly into your communications gear. For example, if a ship equipped with AIS is near you, its icon with course and speed will pop up on your screen, so even without visually spotting it, you’ll be aware of its presence. The Ray91, like the Ray90, supports adding a second station – you can have a wireless handset at the helm and a wired one in the cabin, or any combination you prefer. The two stations also act as an intercom, which is handy for relaying instructions on board. Loudhailer and foghorn capabilities are present here as well – connect a deck horn speaker and you can shout to your crew or sound fog signals at the push of a button, all while the AIS receiver hints if there are other vessels in the fog. For DSC operations, the Ray91, similar to the Ray90, uses external GPS information – connect the GA150 antenna or a networked GPS source to ensure your distress calls include coordinates. The build of the system is the same rugged design as the Ray90: aluminum black box, waterproof connections, bright-backlit handset. With the Ray91, you get a dual-purpose tool – a ship radio and AIS watcher in one, saving space and complexity while enhancing safety.
- Great for those who want AIS without an extra unit: the Ray91 provides all the benefits of AIS (monitoring nearby vessels) without the need to install a separate AIS receiver – fewer devices, fewer wires, fewer headaches
- Boosted maritime safety: seeing AIS targets on screen helps you avoid potential collisions – especially useful for smaller boats that want to stay safe around large ships (which often rely on AIS to detect small craft)
- Efficient solution for limited space: if your helm panel is already crowded, the Ray91 gives you AIS functionality “built into” the radio – no need for additional displays or controllers
- Easy fleet monitoring: if you’re cruising in company or managing a small fleet, the AIS receiver lets you keep an eye on your buddies – you can see if everyone is on course and even exchange messages with them via DSC using the received MMSI info
- All-in-one for the modern captain: the Ray91 concentrates key communication and navigation functions into one device – perfect for captains who value high functionality but want simplicity and reliability in their system
