The Thermal Protective Aid (TPA) is a lightweight, emergency insulating suit that greatly increases survival time in cold weather or cold water environments. Constructed from aluminized polyethylene film with a low thermal conductivity, the TPA reflects and retains body heat. It is waterproof and windproof, shielding survivors from rain, wind, and spray. The TPA is designed to be donned over a lifejacket; it comes in a large bag-like form that can accommodate an adult wearing a lifejacket. Two styles are available: without sleeves (standard TPA sleep-bag style) for maximum simplicity, and with sleeves (wearable suit style) which allows some arm mobility. Both styles cover the wearer entirely (including head, via an integrated hood) to minimize heat loss through convection and evaporation. The bright aluminized exterior also serves as a reflective signal for rescuers. TPA suits are mandatory on SOLAS vessels – they meet MED 2014/90/EU and IMO MSC 81(70) requirements for thermal protection. Packed compactly, a TPA can be easily stored in emergency kits on ships or liferafts. Five-Marine’s TPA ensures that survivors stay warm and are protected from exposure while awaiting rescue, significantly improving post-evacuation safety.
