This adjustable oar lock with base is specifically designed for inflatable boats and RIBs that don’t have rigid gunwales to mount standard rowlocks. The set consists of two parts – a flexible PVC rubber base (130 x 90 mm) that glues to the boat’s fabric, and the oar lock clamp itself, which attaches to the base via a hinge pin.
Adjustability & Compatibility: The clamp (rowlock) is constructed to adjust to the thickness of the oar. It features a screw or tightening mechanism that allows it to clamp around the oar’s handle securely without overly crushing it. This means if you change to a slightly thicker or thinner oar, you don’t need a whole new rowlock – you simply adjust it. Typically, this model covers diameters of about 28 to 32 mm, which encompasses most inflatable boat oars. When loosened or detached, the clamp can release the oar (so you can bring the oar inside the boat or remove it for transport).
Base & Installation: The 130 x 90 mm rubber base provides ample area to form a strong bond with the boat’s tube. It is attached using PVC adhesive (the same glue used for repairing inflatables – e.g., a two-part PVC boat adhesive). Installation involves positioning the base on the desired spot on the tube (usually at a comfortable rowing position, symmetrically on both sides of the boat), marking the outline, prepping the surface (light sanding and cleaning), and then applying the adhesive per the instructions. After gluing and allowing proper curing time, the base becomes like an integral part of the boat. It has an integrated socket where the oar lock clamp (the movable part) inserts and is secured with a metal pin. That pin is typically brass or stainless steel to prevent rust. The result is that the rowlock can pivot and swivel, but it won’t come off the base unless you intentionally remove the pin.
- Benefit – Detachable Rowlock: The design allows the oar lock (clamp) to be easily detached from the base when not in use. This is very convenient when stowing the boat – for example, if you’re deflating and folding an inflatable, you can remove the oars and rowlocks so they don’t protrude or get damaged. Also, if the rowlock itself ever gets damaged or wears out, it can be replaced separately without having to peel off the base from the boat.
- Load Resistance: When properly glued, the base can handle significant forces – such as vigorous rowing or even leaning on the oar while in the boat. The 130x90 mm size distributes the stress over a sufficient area so that the boat’s fabric won’t tear under normal use. The material (PVC) has some elasticity to absorb shock, and the adhesive forms a chemical bond with the boat’s PVC fabric (note: this base is intended for PVC boats – hypalon boats require a different type of base or adhesive).
- Color & Design: The light grey color is standard for many inflatable boat accessories, combining practicality and aesthetics. Light colors don’t heat up as much in the sun (unlike black), so there’s less risk of the base overheating and harming the boat’s material. Also, grey matches most boats, making it look like an original part of the boat’s equipment.
- Usage Recommendations: This 130x90 mm oar lock set is particularly well-suited for small to medium inflatable boats – roughly in the 2 to 3.5 meter range. On these boats, oars are essential for maneuvering and backup propulsion, and the adjustable clamp makes rowing easier by holding the oar steady while still allowing you to remove it when switching to a motor or when passing obstacles. For larger inflatables (above ~3.5 m) or more intensive use, EVAL also offers a bigger base option (e.g., 200 x 90 mm code 02199-7) with a reinforced pin – that larger base spreads the load over an even greater area. However, for most standard dinghies and tenders, this 130x90 mm set is sufficient and often preferred because of its more compact size and easier installation.
