This drop-nose safety pin may be small but it’s critically important for the secure use of your boat canopy. Made from high-quality 316 stainless steel, the pin resists rust and maintains its strength even after prolonged exposure to the marine environment. The “drop-nose” design means the tip of the pin is hinged and locks at a right angle once the pin is fully inserted. An internal spring holds the nose straight while inserting, and automatically drops the nose into locking position as soon as the pin goes through the fitting – preventing it from coming back out until the nose is manually aligned.
This mechanism eliminates the need for separate cotter pins or nuts – the pin is self-locking. The 6 mm diameter makes it suitable for most standard deck hinges, concave bases, jaw slides, and brackets used in bimini tops. Its length is engineered to fit through standard thickness fittings and frame eyes; any excess length is minimal to avoid snagging.
- Applications: Use this pin to secure your bimini top to its deck bases, to lock hinge joints (e.g., folding connections in the frame), or even for various other quick-release needs on the boat – such as a removable ladder, securing a hatch, table, or anything else that fits. Its universal design makes it a handy small part for countless applications.
- Security: The pin is designed not to work loose on its own – extremely important at high speeds or in choppy waters where vibrations could shake out a regular straight pin. With the drop-nose mechanism, you can boat with confidence knowing your canopy frame is locked in and won’t suddenly detach.
- Spare Part: It’s advisable to keep at least one spare of these pins on board. Although the mechanism is reliable, tiny parts can be dropped overboard during handling. As a spare, this pin is very versatile and can replace a lost or broken original canopy pin from almost any brand (Osculati, EVAL, Attwood, etc.).
- Ease of Use & Maintenance: To remove the pin, simply press the nose against its spring (until it aligns with the pin’s body) and pull it out. To insert – press the nose, push the pin through the holes, and release to lock. Rinse it with fresh water occasionally and apply a drop of lubricant to the nose hinge to ensure smooth action. The construction is simple and robust; with minimal care it will operate flawlessly for years.
