Masthead (Steaming) Light 225°, Stainless Steel – Vertical Mount (White)

Code:
11.414.03

A white masthead (steaming) light for power-driven mode on boats (up to 12m) with a 225° illumination sector. Stainless steel housing (AISI 316) for vertical mounting high above the deck (mast or cabin top). Shines forward in a 225° arc (from one abeam to the other), indicating the vessel is under engine power. Compact, bright, and certified. Key features:

  • 225° Steaming Light: Emits white light forward and to the sides (225° total) – covers the sector from 22.5° abaft the beam on one side to 22.5° abaft the beam on the other. Used as the masthead light when sailing vessels are under power or continuously on powerboats.
  • Stainless Steel Housing: Rugged and sleek polished stainless steel body, protected against corrosion and impact. Matches other stainless lights, ensuring durability and water-resistance of the unit.
  • Vertical Mount, Elevated: Flat back for installation on a mast, masthead, or superstructure (hardtop/arch above cabin). Must be positioned at least 1m above sidelights (per regulations). Easy screw mounting; small footprint (~80x58x38 mm).
  • 12V/10W Bulb: Includes a 12V 10W halogen bulb, providing a strong beam visible at least 2 nm (requirement for masthead lights on <12m). Can be replaced with LED if needed, maintaining brightness.
  • Compliance & Integration: COLREG approved for vessels <12m. Complements the stainless bi-color and stern lights in the series perfectly. Mandatory for motorboats and sailboats under engine – shows that the vessel is underway by power.

The bow (steaming) light 11.414.03 – often called the “masthead light” – serves to indicate a vessel that is powered by an engine. For motorboats, it is continuously lit at night, and for sailing yachts it is used when the yacht is under motor (in conjunction with sidelights and stern light). This light emits a white beam covering 225° horizontally – from a little aft of the beam on one side, forward across the bow, to a little aft of the beam on the other side. In this way, ships in front of you or off your sides can see your white light and realize that you are under power (in combination with the stern light, these two form a full 360° circle of white light, but split into two sections – 225° from the masthead and 135° from the stern).

This model is part of the high-quality Utility 85 stainless series and is compact in size yet high in brightness. The body of stainless steel 316 is smoothly polished – lending a beautiful appearance to its installation high on a mast or cabin top. The stainless construction ensures that even when mounted permanently outdoors (sun, rain, salt spray) the light will maintain its function and appearance. This is important for a masthead light, which usually sits high and may be hard to reach – you want a component you can rely on without frequent repairs.

It mounts vertically – for example, to the front of a mast on a sailboat, or on a masthead post/arch on a motorboat. International rules (COLREGs) require it to be at least 1 meter above the sidelights to avoid confusion between them. So, if you pair this light with a bi-color at the bow, ensure the masthead is sufficiently higher (usually mounted around cabin roof level or on a pole). The unit’s compactness means it suits even small consoles – some install it on a fiberglass hardtop or on the windshield frame.

Electrically, the light comes with a 12V/10W halogen bulb, which provides the necessary intensity (minimum 2 nm visibility) for boats under 12m. Of course, as with others in the series, you can fit an LED if you want to reduce consumption and increase the source’s life. The metal body dissipates heat well and keeps water out – the seals and quality assembly (typical of Osculati) keep the interior dry.

Usage & Recommendations:

  • Mandatory for powered vessels: If you own a motorboat or PWC, this 225° light is a key part of your lighting. Mount it as high as possible on the superstructure – for instance, on the cabin roof or on a dedicated light mast. It should be clearly visible from around the vessel, not blocked by antennas or equipment.
  • Sailing yachts under engine: For sailboats, this light comes into play when under motor. It’s typically placed on the mast (often about 2/3 up, or at the top if there is no tri-color up there). Some sailboats have combined fixtures – this model can be used exactly for that: paired with a tri-color (when the engine is off, the tri-color is on; when the engine is on, the 225° masthead and stern light are on, and the tri-color is off). If your yacht doesn’t have a factory steaming light, this stainless fixture is an excellent retrofit choice thanks to its easy installation and low profile.
  • Combine for full visibility: As reiterated, we recommend completing the set – this masthead light works together with the sidelights (red/green) and the stern light. All these Osculati Utility 85 parts are designed to be visually and functionally compatible. When installed, they give your boat a cohesive, professional look.
  • Maintenance: Situated high up, this light doesn’t require much care – when you haul out or lower the mast (for sailboats), check the wiring and polish the steel with a stainless cleaner to remove any deposits and restore shine. With proper mounting and sealing, the inside stays dry – if you ever notice condensation, you should open and dry it, but that’s rare with quality products like this.
  • Superiority: Stainless nav lights like this outmatch standard plastic ones in reliability and looks. They also add value to your vessel. With 11.414.03, as well as the corresponding bow and stern lights, your boat will have equipment a cut above most others – an important plus for safety and impression.
