This small reinforced buoy (31 cm x 13 cm) is designed for multi-purpose use in marine environments, primarily as a fishing float or marker. Thanks to its compact size, it’s widely employed by fishermen to mark the ends of nets, strings of crab pots or other gear, as well as a floating indicator for various purposes. The orange color is highly visible and serves as a warning signal to boaters that equipment is deployed nearby.
Construction: The buoy is made from a high-quality plastic polymer (polyethylene) with thickened walls, allowing it to withstand impact (for instance, waves or a bump from a boat). The material is resistant to saltwater and sunlight, so the buoy can remain in the water for extended periods without degrading.
At the top and bottom of the cylinder, two handles/eyes are molded in. These sturdy attachment points let you tie lines or clips to the buoy. For example, the top eye can be used to fasten the float to the end of a net line, while the bottom eye can be used to attach a weight to keep it tensioned. The dual attachment options add versatility: you can link multiple buoys in a line or provide more stable anchoring in strong currents.
Buoyancy & usage: With a buoyant force of about 18 newtons (~1.8 kg), this small buoy easily supports light to moderate loads on the surface – enough for typical fishing nets, diver markers, small pick-up anchors (for a dinghy, for instance) or even as an auxiliary throw-able float. Its low self-weight of ~150 grams means the float adds virtually no extra burden to your gear.
Practical examples:
- Fishing: Use the buoy to mark the position of a set gillnet, trotline, or crab trap line. The orange marker will clearly indicate where your catch gear is located.
- Diving: It can serve as a small surface marker for a diver or a float for deco stops (though primary dive buoys with flags are usually larger).
- Boating: As an improvised anchor buoy – attach it to the end of a line tied to your anchor to mark its location (helpful if you ever need to slip your anchor quickly and return to retrieve it via the marker later).
- Others: Delineating a swim area or race lane in a small body of water; temporarily marking underwater hazards (shallow rocks) for later retrieval.
When using, ensure lines are securely knotted to the eyes. The buoy is easy to store – it can be stowed in a locker or crate without taking up much room. This is an inexpensive and effective accessory that greatly aids orientation and safety on the water.
