The Eval 00662 is a straight (90°) rail base for tubing, a key element when constructing various structures on your boat. If you need to secure a tube vertically (such as a stanchion for a guardrail) to the deck or horizontally to a wall, this little plastic base does the job. Its footprint is only 74×39 mm, but despite the small size, it provides a stable grip on the surface through its two screw holes. When mounting on a deck, typically 2 stainless steel screws are used to firmly anchor the flange. Additionally, inside the tube socket there is a small pre-molded hole where you can insert a locking screw or pin to prevent the tube from rotating or pulling out.
Material: It’s made of tough engineered plastic (nylon or acetal polymer), available in either black or white. This plastic is UV-resistant and impact-resistant, meaning it won’t crack or lose integrity after long sun exposure or under mechanical stress. Unlike metal bases, there’s no risk of rust here, which is a big advantage for use on deck in saltwater. Also, the plastic won’t scratch your boat’s surfaces and there’s no galvanic corrosion when in contact with other metals.
Applications: This 90-degree base is extremely versatile:
- It can be used for mounting railings and guardrails around the boat’s edges or in the cockpit. For example, if you’re building a low bow rail, each vertical stanchion can be attached to the deck with one of these bases.
- Excellent for bimini tops and canopies – serves as the bottom foot for the support poles of the canopy. When you fold the bimini down, the hinge of the top remains attached to this base.
- It’s also used on RIBs (rigid inflatable boats) where you attach additional handles or frames to the hard deck or transom (like a mount for a navigation light pole or a seat frame).
- Suitable for hatches and seats: Some folding seats or tables on boats require a detachable post. This base can hold the post when needed and allow you to remove it when not in use.
- It also finds use in building fences or stands in campers or RVs, where similar tubing is used – although intended for boats, the plastic base can be used universally for many projects.
Installation: Position the base at the desired location and mark the holes. Drill pilot holes and use appropriate stainless steel screws to fasten the base. It’s recommended to use washers under the screw heads and nuts with backing washers underneath if accessible (to spread the load on a thin panel). Once the base is secured, insert the Ø22 mm tube into it. If required, tighten a small set screw through the provided hole into the tube to ensure it’s completely locked in place. If the tube will be removed frequently, you might skip that screw or use a quick-release pin instead for convenience.
The Eval 00662 (90° base), combined with Eval 00663 (60° base) and 00665 (connectors), allows you to build an entire system of railings and frames on your boat using only plastic components – lightweight, durable, and easy to install. This base may be small in appearance, but it plays a big role in providing safety and convenience on board.
