Code:
01497-60

A reinforced trailer hitch coupler (“tongue latch”) for trailers up to 1500 kg gross weight. Made of galvanized steel for maximum resistance to rust and heavy loads. Available in two mounting sizes – fits 60×60 mm or 70×70 mm square trailer tongues, covering various frame dimensions. Features a standard 50 mm ball socket with a secure locking lever and safety mechanism to prevent uncoupling.

  • 1.5-ton capacity: Suitable for medium to heavy trailers, dual-axle boat trailers, caravans, etc., that require a robust hitch connection.
  • Galvanized steel: Zinc-coated for corrosion protection – ideal for boat trailers and use in all weather conditions.
  • Two versions (60/70 mm): Fits 60mm or 70mm square drawbar profiles. Choose the correct model based on your trailer’s frame size for a snug fit.
  • Standard 50mm ball: Attaches to a standard Φ50 mm tow ball (European standard). Equipped with a strong locking handle and latch for secure attachment to the hitch ball.

This heavy-duty trailer coupler rated up to 1500 kg is designed to provide a strong and secure connection between your trailer and tow vehicle, even under higher loads. Its construction is made from thick-gauge steel which has been hot-dip galvanized – this coating process ensures excellent resistance to rust and wear, which is especially important if the trailer is used frequently or in wet/salty environments (for example, with marine boat trailers). The 1500 kg capacity makes it suitable for a variety of uses: from large caravans and construction trailers to medium-sized boats on trailers.

Mounting and compatibility: The coupler comes in two versions to fit different trailer frame sizes:

  • 60 mm model: intended for trailers with a square tongue/frame around 60×60 mm in cross-section. These dimensions are common for many single-axle and some dual-axle trailers.
  • 70 mm model: for trailers with a larger square profile around 70×70 mm. Such profiles are found on heavier-duty trailers and specialty trailers where a stronger frame is needed.

It’s important to choose the variant that matches the width of your trailer’s profile so that the coupler can be mounted securely using the bolts on the trailer’s drawbar. Typically, installation uses two high-strength bolts (for example, M12 or M14 of grade 8.8 or higher) that go through holes in the coupler and the trailer frame. The hole spacing is standard (around 90 mm apart) to align with factory-drilled holes on trailer tongues.

Standardized hitch socket: The front part of the coupler features a socket and mechanism compatible with a standard 50 mm hitch ball – this is the universal ball size in Europe for trailers up to 3500 kg. Inside the coupler is a locking lever mechanism that clamps onto the ball. When you push the lever down, an internal clamp securely grabs the tow ball. For added safety, there is a indicator or lock hole: many models have a colored indicator showing proper engagement, and a hole where you can insert a locking pin or a small padlock. This prevents the lever from accidentally opening and also serves as theft protection when the trailer is left unattended.

Reliability and safety:

  • The coupler is engineered to withstand dynamic stresses and jolts during driving. Its reinforced design means less flexing or deformation even at maximum load (for instance, during sudden starts or stops).
  • Standards compliant: The product meets European regulations (e.g., ECE R55) and carries the appropriate certification markings. This means it has been tested for strength and durability. When properly installed, it provides a secure towing connection and won’t fail under normal usage.
  • Smooth operation: The lever mechanism is designed to engage and disengage smoothly without excessive force, even when new. Over time, and with a bit of grease on the moving parts, it operates even more easily. In the closed position, the lever snaps into place and remains fixed so it cannot open due to vibrations.

Recommended use: This coupler is an excellent choice for heavier trailers and boat trailers. For example:

  • A boat on a trailer around 6–7 meters long (with a combined weight of boat and trailer around or under 1500 kg).
  • Large caravans or single-axle campers where the strength of the coupler is critical for highway safety.
  • Tandem-axle trailers for cars or equipment, car hauling flatbeds, construction material trailers, etc., that often approach this weight class.
  • Heavy loads such as agricultural produce or equipment transported on a trailer – farm utility trailers, horsebox trailers, etc., as long as they stay within the 1.5-ton limit.

By installing this heavy-duty coupler, you invest in safety and longevity. Proper installation (with the correct bolts tightened to the manufacturer’s recommended torque) is crucial – it’s advisable to have it done by a professional or to follow the included instructions carefully. After installation, periodically check that the mounting bolts remain tight and apply grease to the lever’s moving parts for smooth operation. With this product, your trailer will be securely fastened to your vehicle, allowing you to travel with confidence both on short hauls and long journeys abroad.
