The FDF Orion red parachute rocket flare is one of the most effective long-range distress signals available to mariners. Upon activation (by pulling the built-in trigger or cord), the rocket launches vertically and ascends to roughly 300 meters or more in altitude. At the apex of its flight, it ejects a brilliantly bright red signal star attached to a small parachute.
The parachute greatly slows the descent of the burning flare, allowing the red light to remain high in the sky for about 40 seconds. During this time, the signal flame produces a light intensity of approximately 30,000 candela, making it visible from extremely long distances (often many nautical miles under clear conditions). At night, this type of signal is easily seen both by ships on the horizon and by aircraft overhead participating in search efforts. Even in daytime with limited visibility (fog, haze), the brightness and elevation of the parachute flare make it stand out far more than hand-held flares.
The FDF Orion is built for reliability even under adverse weather. Its casing is robust, waterproof, and can withstand impact or vibration, ensuring it will function properly when needed. Firing is achieved by a pull mechanism – once initiated, the internal firing cap ignites the rocket propellant, launching the flare skyward. The rocket is designed to fire vertically, well clear of the user and the vessel.
This parachute rocket meets SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea Convention) requirements for night distress signals. It is a mandatory component of the pyrotechnic emergency kit on ships that voyage offshore beyond coastal waters (e.g., beyond 3–6 nm from shore), and it is strongly recommended for all yachts venturing into open waters. Orion flares have a service life of about 4 years from manufacture; after expiry, it is important to replace them with new ones to ensure proper performance in an emergency.
- Usage: A primary element of the pyrotechnic distress signals on any ocean-going yacht or vessel. Used to send a long-range distress signal, especially effective at night or in conditions where a high-visibility aerial signal is needed.
- Offshore Preparedness: It is advised to carry at least 2–4 parachute rocket flares in each lifeboat or liferaft pack, as well as in the ship’s general emergency kit, when sailing far offshore. This ensures multiple attempts to signal over time if necessary.
- Night Signaling: This rocket provides the most effective means of attracting attention over a wide area at night – its bright flame can be seen from very far away, which is crucial for locating those in distress. (Even in daylight, the combination of altitude and smoke trail can assist in detection.)
- Safe Operation: When used correctly, the Orion rocket flare is safe – it launches straight up and away from personnel. Always follow the instructions printed on the device (or included leaflet) when firing to ensure proper functioning and safety.
