This rectangular opening portlight is designed to bring light and fresh air into your boat’s interior without compromising on watertight integrity or strength. The frame is made from anodized aluminum – the anodization process creates a protective layer that shields the metal from oxidation. This means the frame will retain its appearance and function even with constant exposure to a damp, salty environment. Additionally, aluminum keeps the unit lightweight while remaining very sturdy.
The window pane of the portlight is 10 mm thick plexiglass. This material is widely used in marine applications due to its impact resistance and the fact that it won’t shatter into sharp pieces like regular glass. The 10 mm thickness adds extra rigidity – it can withstand pressure from wind and waves as well as occasional knocks. The plexiglass is typically tinted with a light smoke or bronze hue, which reduces glare and UV rays entering, while still allowing plenty of light into the cabin.
The portlight opens on hinges – usually swinging outward – and features locking mechanisms (lever or knob latches) on the inside. These locks hold the window securely against the frame when closed, compressing a rubber gasket between the window and frame. This ensures that when shut, the portlight is completely watertight and will not leak even in rain or spray. When open, the portlight provides effective ventilation – essential for a comfortable cabin environment below deck.
Application & Installation:
- This model (33×19 cm) is suitable for mounting in the side of the hull or cabin top of boats – it’s commonly used for cabin windows on small yachts, motorboats, and cruisers. It works well as a galley window, a head (bathroom) port, or in the sleeping quarters of the boat
- Installation: It requires cutting a rectangular hole in the boat’s structure to the specified cutout dimensions. The portlight’s frame is typically secured with screws; often the set comes with an inner trim ring that attaches from the inside, sandwiching the hull/deck between the outer and inner frame. It’s recommended to use a sealant (marine silicone or polyurethane) around the perimeter during installation to ensure a long-lasting waterproof seal
- Ventilation & Light: By installing this portlight, you will significantly improve airflow and natural lighting in the cabin. On hot days it can be opened to allow cross-breeze, and the robust hinge and latch system will keep it propped open or tightly shut even when the boat is in motion
- We recommend cleaning the plexiglass window regularly with a soft cloth and appropriate cleaner to avoid scratches. Also, periodically lubricate the hinges and inspect the rubber seal – if it becomes hard or damaged, replace it to maintain watertight performance
