Quicksilver 2-4-C Marine Grease with Teflon is a well-known product among boaters and technicians, valued for its versatility and reliability. Formulated with a lithium soap base and fortified with PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene), this grease offers a combination of exceptional water resistance and low friction. Once applied, it creates a thick film that will not wash out under spray or waves and retains its consistency even if water enters the mechanism. That’s why 2-4-C is a go-to grease for marine use – it won’t emulsify or run when moisture is present.
The PTFE particles (Teflon) in the mix act like microscopic cushions, reducing direct metal-to-metal contact. This means components lubricated with 2-4-C move more freely, wear more slowly, and avoid the squeaks or binding that can occur when lubrication is insufficient.
Quicksilver 2-4-C is a multi-purpose lubricant – it’s engineered to meet the many lubrication needs around a boat. From the steering system to engine linkages, from trailer hubs to hatch hinges – this grease covers it all wherever grease is needed. It also contains EP (Extreme Pressure) additives, allowing it to withstand the loads of heavy-duty applications (for example, a heavily loaded bearing) without losing its lubricating properties.
- Typical use cases: Quicksilver 2-4-C is widely used for lubricating control cables and linkages – for instance, periodically greasing the throttle and shift cables or the pivots in the steering system will keep the controls light and responsive. It is often applied to tilt/trim mechanisms and transom hinge pins – for example, greasing the tilt tube and pivot bolts to prevent seizing when raising/lowering the engine. Swivel pins and pivots on outboard motors and sterndrive units – after treatment with 2-4-C they remain movable and protected from corrosion. It’s also suitable for trailer wheel bearings and hubs – although it’s not a dedicated wheel bearing grease, many use it for light to moderate trailer duty since it resists water and prevents rust inside the bearing assemblies.
- Recommended boats/environments: Recommended for any boat – whether it’s a small fishing skiff, a power speedboat, or a sailboat with an auxiliary outboard – because maintenance with 2-4-C can cover many components. It’s particularly valuable in saltwater environments, where constant salt exposure can quickly corrode unprotected parts: Quicksilver 2-4-C forms a barrier that shields metal surfaces. During off-season storage, components coated with 2-4-C are better protected over long idle periods (e.g., trailer leaf springs or padlock hinges over winter). Note: it is not intended for high-speed bearings inside engines or other high-RPM applications – specialized greases are required for those.
- Usage tips: Before application, clean off old grease or rust from the surface for maximum effectiveness. Quicksilver 2-4-C comes in cartridges that can easily be loaded into a grease gun (e.g., Quicksilver Pistol Grip Grease Gun 91-37299Q2) for convenient application. When greasing via fittings (zerks), pump until you see fresh grease begin to ooze out – this pushes out old grease and contaminants. Wipe away any excess to prevent it from attracting dirt. For points without fittings, apply a thin layer manually over the entire contact area. Avoid mixing 2-4-C with incompatible greases (for example, silicone-based or certain calcium-based greases) – if you are switching from another type, it’s best to remove as much of the old grease as possible. Keep the grease tube cap tightly sealed to prevent contamination. With regular lubrication using 2-4-C, you’ll notice smoother mechanical operation and longer intervals between maintenance issues.
