This gasket (seal) is designed to waterproof the joint between the porcelain bowl and the base (pump unit) of an electric marine toilet. It’s a thick rubber ring with a specific profile that sits in a groove on the base and is compressed by the bowl when bolted down. When the gasket is in good condition, the connection between the bowl and base is completely watertight – neither clean flush water nor waste can leak out, nor can air be drawn in at that junction. This is important for hygiene (prevents sewage leaks and odors) and for proper pump function (no air ingress ensures good vacuum and pump prime).
Over time – and especially after disassembly – the original gasket may become deformed, flattened, or cracked. Rubber materials age: they lose elasticity and can harden or swell. As a result, when the bowl is reattached to the base, a subtle leak might develop. This often shows up as dampness around the toilet’s base or a faint sewage odor in the head. The solution is to replace the gasket with a new one, which will restore a tight seal once again.
- Compatibility & Installation: This gasket is compatible with all our electric toilets based on model 02284/02281, and it typically fits most standard marine electric toilets (e.g., TMC, base-model Jabsco units). Installation requires removing the ceramic bowl (usually secured by a few bolts to the base), taking out the old gasket, cleaning the mating surfaces and groove, and seating the new gasket correctly in place. Then the bowl is re-bolted, tightening the screws in a cross pattern and to a moderate torque.
- Installation Tip: Avoid over-tightening the bowl mounting bolts – even, firm contact is sufficient. Over-tightening won’t improve the seal and could actually deform the gasket or even crack the porcelain. The new gasket, being pliable, will create an excellent seal under normal tightening pressure.
- Signs of Needing Replacement: If you notice water around the base of the toilet after flushing or detect persistent bad odors in the compartment, the gasket may be failing to seal. Also, anytime the bowl has been removed, you should plan to install a new gasket during reassembly – it’s a small investment that prevents big problems.
- Maintaining Good Hygiene: A fresh gasket not only stops leaks but also helps keep the head compartment clean and dry. With no sewage seeping out, there’s no opportunity for bacteria or mold to grow around the base, and foul odors stay confined within the system where they can be properly routed to a holding tank or overboard.
