The Seabung through-hull plugging kit is an innovative solution that every boat owner should consider. The package includes two plugs of different sizes, made from a flexible yet extremely tough polymer. Using them is simple: when you need to replace a faulty seacock valve or control a leak, just insert the appropriate Seabung plug through the open seacock from inside the boat. The flexible dome immediately pops back to its original shape on the outside of the hull, tightly sealing the opening and stopping the water ingress. This allows you to safely remove the old valve or stem the flow of water until you reach a safe location.
Material & Design: The plugs are made of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) with an integrated sturdy plastic handle/rod. This material is flexible enough to deform as it’s pushed through an opening, yet instantly resumes its shape to ensure a reliable seal. At the top of each plug, there’s a molded eyelet – you can attach a line to secure the plug (preventing it from drifting away outside) and to facilitate its retrieval. The kit also includes a secondary inner rubber cap with a slit (to slip over the rod inside) for additional sealing if needed, for example while underway after an emergency insertion.
Applications & Benefits:
- Seacock Replacement: Seabung allows you to swap out a defective or corroded through-hull valve without waiting for a haul-out. This saves time and money – the repair can be done afloat, whether at a marina berth or a calm anchorage.
- Emergency Safety: In case of a broken thru-hull fitting, a popped hose, or a small hull breach, the plug temporarily stops or drastically reduces incoming water. This gives you precious time to respond – to permanently seal the leak from inside, navigate to shallow water, or call for assistance.
- Versatility: The small plug covers holes roughly from 3/4" to 1-1/4" (~19–32 mm) diameter, and the large one from 1" to 2" (~25–52 mm). With them, you can secure most standard seacock sizes, pump outlets, drain openings, etc.
- Must-Have Safety Gear: It’s recommended that every boat – especially those with multiple below-waterline openings (sailboats, motor yachts with toilets, cooling systems, etc.) – carry a Seabung or similar kit on board. It complements traditional wooden cone plugs by offering reusability and a more dependable seal.
- Ease of Use: Even in a high-stress situation, an average boater can quickly understand and deploy Seabung – there’s no ambiguity, you simply push it through the hole. Make sure you familiarize your crew beforehand with the kit’s location and usage instructions as part of your safety drills.
With Seabung, you enhance your self-sufficiency and readiness to tackle problems without relying solely on shore facilities. It’s a relatively small investment compared to the potential damage from flooding or the cost of an emergency haul-out. The kit comes in a convenient package that can be stowed in a locker or with your safety equipment, ready for when it’s needed.
