This plastic recessed box with lid, often referred to as a “glove box” or service locker, is designed to provide a secure and dry storage space on your boat without occupying unnecessary room. The body and lid are made of high-quality white ABS polymer – a material known for its impact resistance and UV stability. This means that even under prolonged sun exposure, the box won’t crack or yellow, maintaining its neat appearance. Its dimensions (300 mm by 100 mm external, ~189 mm depth) make it large enough to hold important items (navigation charts, keys, phones, first aid kit, etc.) yet compact enough to install almost anywhere on the boat.
Design & Functionality: The box is meant to be flush-mounted – it fits into a cut-out opening in a panel, with only a thin flange and the lid visible. The flange has screw holes to secure it to the panel (console, bulkhead, or deck). Once installed, the front sits almost level with the surrounding surface, giving a professional integrated look. The lid is equipped with hinges on one of its longer sides, allowing it to open smoothly. In most applications it is mounted with hinges at the top – so the lid folds down like a small door. However, it can also be installed horizontally (on a horizontal surface, opening upward). The inside of the lid has an indent or small handle grip so you can easily pull it open with your fingers.
Sealing & Protection: Along the inner lip of the frame (where the lid rests when closed), a rubber gasket or O-ring can be fitted (some models include such a seal). This, combined with the snug fit of the lid, provides good water resistance. While the box is not designed for full submersion, it will successfully keep out rain, spray, and splashes. In this way, the contents remain dry under normal boating conditions. Drainage is facilitated by a slightly sloped design and the option to drill a small drain hole at the bottom if any moisture were to collect.
Practical Use Cases:
- Mount this box on your dashboard/console to store documents (like logbooks, permits), small navigation tools (handheld GPS, compass), personal items (sunblock, sunglasses), or tools that you want within reach but protected. It functions as a glove compartment for your boat – decluttering surfaces and keeping items secure.
- In the cockpit or on deck, this box can serve as a locker for small accessories: spare lines, shackles, flashlights, even a compact first aid kit. Since the lid is flat, you can walk or sit on it (depending on placement) without it feeling obtrusive.
- In the cabins, you can integrate the box into a wall or under a berth for extra storage of valuables, emergency kits, or electronics in a dry environment. The white plastic has a neutral look that blends with most interiors.
Locking: This model (code 04235) comes without a built-in lock, with the lid held closed by a simple friction catch or snug gasket fit. If you desire extra security, the design allows adding a small lock or latch (Eval offers a lock accessory code 3367 compatible with this box). That way you can lock the compartment with a key if you store valuables inside.
Installation Tips: When cutting the opening for the box, measure the inner dimensions carefully (approximately 276 x 76 mm cut-out to account for the flange). Use a power tool (like a jigsaw) for a clean cut and sand the edges. Apply a bead of marine sealant (silicone/polymer) under the flange before screwing it down – this will further waterproof the installation and dampen vibrations. Tighten the screws evenly, but do not overtighten (ABS is tough, but excessive force could deform it).
With this plastic recessed box, you’ll add functional storage to your boat – organized, protected, and easily accessible. Its tough, weather-resistant construction ensures that contents remain dry and secure whether you’re at sea or at the dock.
