This emergency ladder is designed to save lives in a man-overboard incident. In normal conditions it is stored compactly in a special cylindrical canister that is typically mounted on the boat’s stern. The canister is waterproof and protects the folded ladder from the elements, keeping it dry and ready for use. In an emergency situation, simply remove the canister’s cover – the ladder immediately deploys and drops into the water, allowing the person overboard to grab it. Without needing anyone else’s help, the person can climb up the three sturdy steps back to safety on board.
The ladder is 110 cm long and about 13.5 cm wide, and the spacing of the rungs is designed for easy climbing. It’s made of materials that withstand the marine environment – the steps and side straps do not absorb water, and the entire assembly is UV-stabilized and salt-resistant. Installation is straightforward: the canister is affixed to the transom or another vertical surface at the stern using the included brackets/mounts. This way, the ladder takes up no deck space and remains out of the way. In case of need – just yank off the cover (some models have a quick-release pin or a pull cord for this purpose) and gravity does the rest, unfurling the ladder into the water.
Usage tips: Mount the emergency ladder in an accessible, unobstructed spot on the stern where a person in the water would naturally swim towards. It’s a good practice to regularly check the seal of the cap to ensure the canister stays watertight. Also, periodically inspect the ladder itself – perform a test deployment (for example, once a year) to see that it unfolds smoothly and that all materials remain intact. If needed, rinse the inside of the container and the ladder with fresh water and let it dry to remove any salt deposits.
This emergency ladder is essential for sailing yachts and motorboats, especially if you sail shorthanded. It adds a crucial layer of safety – even a solo skipper can self-rescue in an accident. The lightweight yet strong construction makes it suitable for vessels of any size. In a critical situation, every second counts – with this ladder you have a quick and reliable means of getting yourself (or a crew member) out of the water.
- Applicability: Recommended for every boat that doesn’t have a permanently mounted boarding ladder – from small motorboats to large sailboats. Regardless of vessel size, having such a ladder on board greatly increases safety.
- Placement: Ensure the canister is mounted low enough that a person in the water can reach the cover (usually near the waterline on the transom).
- Maintenance: Regularly check the cover’s seal and the folding mechanism. If the cover has a safety pin or strap, make sure it can be released quickly in an emergency.
