This stainless steel chain hook is designed to enhance safety at anchor and prolong the life of your anchoring equipment. Its primary role is to act as a connection between the anchor chain and a shock-absorbing line (commonly called a snubber or bridle). Once you’ve set anchor, the hook is clipped onto a chain link (either underwater or just above the surface), and a nylon rope is attached to the hook’s eye and secured to a bow cleat or bitt on your boat.
The benefit of this setup: the rope takes the strain of the boat’s pull, relieving your windlass and chain from sudden stress due to waves or wind gusts. The stainless steel hook (with a ring diameter Ø80 mm) is wide and sturdy enough to grab onto a standard 6-8 mm anchor chain securely. Its polished finish prevents damage to the chain links and snubber line.
By using the hook and a snubber line, the boat rides more smoothly at anchor: the line stretches and absorbs shocks, reducing chain noise and protecting the boat’s hull from jerking if the chain goes taut. This technique is especially valuable when anchoring overnight or in choppy conditions – it ensures a quieter and more comfortable experience on board. Additionally, it protects the windlass gears: instead of the windlass bearing every jolt, the load is transferred to the boat’s cleats via the rope.
Use Cases: This hook is ideal for small to mid-sized boats (roughly 15-25 feet) that use 6 mm or 8 mm anchor chain. It’s compact and easy to stow, yet ready to deploy at a moment’s notice. Once attached, the load on the hook can reach hundreds of kilograms, but the high-strength stainless steel ensures it stays secure. It can also double as an emergency chain holder – for instance, to temporarily take the load off the windlass while you adjust other gear or if the windlass fails.
Usage Tips: For best results, use a nylon or polyester snubber line of appropriate thickness (~12-14 mm) for elasticity. Clip the hook onto the chain at least 1-2 meters (3-6 feet) below the waterline, then pay out a little more chain so the rope takes the full load. Make sure the other end of the snubber is well secured to a cleat or bollard on board. The result – a calm boat, protected equipment, and safer, quieter anchoring thanks to this simple but effective stainless steel chain hook.
