This reinforced polyethylene (PE) hose is designed for modern quick-connect plumbing systems, increasingly common on boats and RVs. With color-coding (blue and red), the hose makes it easy to distinguish cold and hot water lines, reducing the chance of cross-connection errors. Its diameter (Ø10 mm ID / Ø12 mm OD) is standard for many push-fit connectors (e.g., systems like John Guest, Whale, etc.), allowing rapid installation without hose clamps – simply push it into the fitting for a secure lock.
Features and Benefits:
- Pressure Resilient: Thanks to the high-grade PE material and possibly multi-layer construction, the hose withstands the pressure generated by fresh water pumps (typically 3-4 bar, with burst tolerance around ~6-8 bar). This means it can confidently be used as a main line from the pump to distribution manifolds, as well as across long runs in a yacht, without pressure loss or risk of bursting.
- For Hot and Cold Water: The red variant is formulated to handle higher temperatures – perfect for the outlet of a water heater or calorifier (usually around 60-70°C). The material won’t soften or deform with hot water, and the connections will remain tight. The blue hose is optimized for cold/cool water, but in practice both types are identical aside from color and heat rating, so they can be used interchangeably if needed.
- Easy Installation & Routing: PE hoses are semi-rigid, which helps them run straight without sagging and makes them less prone to chafing than very soft hoses. At the same time, they are flexible enough to be directed around corners with the aid of elbow fittings or gentle bends (minimum bend radius is moderate; if a very sharp turn is needed, using a 90° elbow connector is recommended). Quick-connect fittings allow you to cut the hose to the exact length needed and snap it in place – ideal for quick repairs or system reconfigurations.
- Hygienic and Tasteless: Polyethylene is excellent for drinking water because it’s chemically inert and imparts no taste or odor. This is the same type of material often used in home water filter tubing and dispensers. You can safely use it for your yacht’s potable water faucets – your water will remain clean. The hose is also resistant to algae growth inside (the colored, opaque design blocks light), keeping your water clear even if it sits in the hose for a while.
- Applications:
- Freshwater Distribution: Primarily intended for carrying potable and utility water – from the tank to the pump, and from the pump to galley and head faucets, showers, and toilets (for flushing water). For example, you might have a central manifold where blue and red hoses run to each wet area – with clear indication of which is hot and which is cold.
- Solar Shower or Heating Loops: The red hose can connect a solar water heater panel or boiler to your plumbing system since it can handle the elevated temperature.
- Caravans and Motorhomes: It’s ideal for camper interior plumbing as well – lightweight, easy to connect, and resistant to the vibrations and movement during travel.
- Tip: When installing, allow gentle sweeps rather than abrupt bends – although reinforced, the hose will handle it, but an overly sharp bend could reduce flow. Use proper securing clips at intervals to ensure the lines stay neat and don’t rub on sharp edges. With correct installation, a plumbing system using these hoses will provide years of trouble-free service.
