These extended-length PVC end caps are specifically designed for large one-piece rub rail profiles commonly found on RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) tubes and some hard-hull boats. With an overall length of 142 mm, the cap covers a greater portion of the rub rail’s end compared to standard smaller caps – important for thicker profiles (~49 mm height) where the extra coverage prevents the rail from flaring or deforming at the termination point.
The cap’s design features a smooth curve that follows the contour of the boat’s gunwale and transom. Installation is similar to other caps: the rub rail is cut flush and inserted into the cap’s cavity. Internal stops help position it correctly. For a secure hold, it’s recommended to use a small stainless screw through the cap’s provided hole into the rail’s base (the screw remains very unobtrusive and ensures the cap won’t slide off). If a no-screw look is preferred, you can instead apply a strong adhesive/sealant inside the cap before fitting – once cured, this will lock the cap in place firmly.
The white version of the cap is favored for boats with light-colored tubes or white hulls – it maintains a uniform look and doesn’t absorb heat. The black version suits black or dark grey rub rails, blending in seamlessly and resisting showing dirt. Both color variants are UV-stabilized to prevent the PVC from yellowing or becoming brittle over time.
Applications and recommendations:
- RIBs and inflatables: One-piece rub rails (often rope-insert or solid “D” profiles) on RIB boats typically measure around 50 mm in diameter – these caps are ideal for finishing the ends of such rails, especially at the transom where the rub rail terminates
- Hard-hull boats: Some larger motorboats use a one-piece rubber rub rail around the sheerline; if the profile height is ~49 mm, these caps will fit and provide better end protection than standard smaller caps
- Transom reinforcement: Due to their extended shape, the caps can cover and guard a portion of the boat’s transom corner – an area often exposed to bumps during tight maneuvers
- Multi-purpose: Besides protection, the caps can serve as handy attachment points – for instance, hooking on straps for rear tarps or bimini tops that run across the stern
- Tip: If installing in cold weather, soak the cap in warm water for a few minutes to make the PVC more pliable – this makes it easier to push onto the rub rail, particularly if the profile is stiff
