Omega “Bow” Shackles AISI 316 with Hex Socket Pin – Sizes 6 mm, 8 mm, 10 mm, 12 mm, 13 mm

Code:
00225-10

High-quality Omega-shaped bow shackles made of 316 stainless steel, featuring a hex socket (Allen head) screw pin. These shackles provide secure connections for chains, ropes, and rigging, combining maximum corrosion resistance with enhanced locking security. Key features:

  • AISI 316 Stainless Steel: Constructed entirely from marine-grade stainless – ideal for sail and power boats, resisting saltwater corrosion and constant moisture
  • Hex Socket Pin: The locking pin has an internal hex drive (Allen key type) and an O-ring – this design prevents self-loosening under vibration and cannot be easily opened without the proper tool
  • Bow Shape: Wide “omega” bow shackle allows attachment of multiple lines or chains and handles load from various angles better than D-shackles
  • Sizes 6–13 mm: Available in sizes to suit any need – from 6 mm for small craft and accessories up to 13 mm for heavy-duty loads on large yachts. Each thickness roughly matches the chain or rope diameter (e.g., 8 mm shackle for 8 mm chain)

These omega shackles (also known as bow or anchor shackles) are among the most reliable connectors on board. Made from high-grade AISI 316 stainless steel, they are built to withstand the harsh conditions of the sea – they won’t rust or degrade even after prolonged exposure on deck or submerged (e.g., on an anchor or buoy). The polished surface ensures ropes and lines run smoothly over the shackle and minimizes wear and abrasion.

A key feature of these shackles is the hex-socket locking pin. Instead of a typical pin with a cotter or a simple slotted head, this pin is tightened using an Allen key. This brings two advantages: (1) the pin sits flush with the shackle body with no protruding parts that could snag lines or sails; (2) a tool is required to loosen it, which greatly reduces the chance of accidental or unauthorised removal. An additional O-ring on the pin acts as a seal and an extra anti-vibration measure – critically important under engine vibration or the constant motion on a sailboat.

The “omega” (bow) shape provides a larger internal width and flexibility in attachment. It allows for two lines to be attached simultaneously or the connection of thicker ropes/straps, which might be difficult to fit in a straight (D-type) shackle of the same size. A bow shackle also handles multi-directional forces better – perfect for scenarios such as attaching an anchor to a chain (where movement is continuous), rigging sails and halyards on sailing yachts, towing operations, and other situations with dynamic loading.

Available Sizes & Uses:

  • 6 mm (¼"): The smallest size, suitable for light-duty tasks – small dinghies, kayaks, attaching accessories (fenders, flag halyards, etc.). Recommended for ropes/chains around 6 mm diameter
  • 8 mm (5/16"): A common general-purpose size – ideal for securing anchor chains on boats ~16–23 ft, joining sheets and lines, or safety lines and towing bridle on smaller craft. Often used as a standard shackle size in sailboat running rigging. Fits ~8 mm ropes/chains
  • 10 mm (3/8"): Good for heavier loads – anchor rodes on yachts ~25–33 ft, dock lines, and heavy-duty rigging setups. This size offers an excellent balance of strength and manageability, widely used on medium-sized yachts. Pairs well with ~10 mm lines/chains
  • 12 mm: For high-load conditions – larger sail and power yachts, a 12 mm shackle is common for primary anchors, towing other vessels, or critical rigging elements (e.g., attaching large snubbers or mooring lines on bigger boats). Handles substantial loads, fits ~12 mm chains/ropes
  • 13 mm (½"): An even more robust shackle for the most demanding applications. Intended for big yachts and commercial vessels where safety margins are paramount – e.g., main anchor connections, heavy tow bridles, securing heavy equipment. Suitable for ~12–14 mm chains and ropes, with a high strength reserve

Always choose the shackle size according to the weakest element in your system (the chain or rope) – the shackle should be equal or higher in load rating to avoid being the weak link. When installing, tighten the pin firmly with the appropriate Allen key and ensure the O-ring is in place. Periodically inspect your shackles for any signs of fatigue or damage, especially after extreme loads or stress events.
