This folding boarding ladder combines a sturdy stainless steel build with a practical design, making it an excellent choice for small and medium boats. Materials: The ladder is made of marine-grade AISI 316 stainless steel, which is extremely resistant to rust and gives a shiny finish. The steps are made of reinforced polypropylene in white – they are wide (30 cm) and flat with a textured, non-slip surface. The plastic steps have the advantage of not heating up under the sun like metal steps can, and they are comfortable to stand on with bare feet.
Design & Foldability: The ladder features a hinged mechanism that allows it to fold in half or flip up against the transom when not in use. For example, in some designs the top is fixed to the deck and the lower half swings up and secures in place, so it doesn’t dangle in the water while cruising. This protects the ladder from marine growth (algae, barnacles) and reduces drag. Additionally, folding makes storage easier – the ladder takes up less space when stowed.
Variants: Two sizes are available in this range:
- 3 steps (64 cm): Suitable for boats with a low swim platform or transom – for example, small fishing boats, RIBs, or trailerable boats around 10–16 feet. The length allows the ladder to dip sufficiently into the water so swimmers can easily get a foot on the first rung.
- 4 steps (86 cm): Recommended for vessels with a slightly higher freeboard or boats around 16–23 feet. The extra step provides additional depth – useful if your boat has an elevated stern or if the waterline sits higher.
In both cases, the ladder supports the weight of an adult (typically up to ~120 kg, depending on installation) thanks to its solid construction and support points. Installation can be done in two ways: by bolting directly to the swim platform/deck or by using special mounting brackets/hooks that allow the ladder to be attached and removed. The package usually includes stainless steel mounting plates and screws. It’s recommended to install on a flat, sturdy surface that can bear weight – such as a swim platform or the transom near the waterline.
Usage: This ladder is perfect as a swim ladder – deploy it into the water so swimmers can climb back aboard. Thanks to the wide, non-slip steps it’s comfortable for bare, wet feet. It also serves as an primary boarding ladder when getting on from a dock – especially for smaller vessels that lack a permanent gangway. When the boat is on a trailer or dry dock, the folding ladder provides an easy way to climb aboard without needing an external ladder.
For longevity, after each use in saltwater, rinse the ladder with fresh water and let it dry. Periodically check the hinges and fasteners – tighten screws if needed to avoid wobble. With proper maintenance, this ladder will perform reliably for many years, ensuring safety and comfort whenever you board your boat.
- 3-step model: Compact and lightweight, recommended for boats with low freeboard or small platforms. Easy to stow without interfering with the engine or steering.
- 4-step model: Provides greater reach – ideal for higher transoms and situations where the boat is a bit larger. The additional rung makes boarding significantly easier for taller individuals or when the water level is lower.
- Mounting tip: If using removable hooks for the ladder, position them such that the ladder leans slightly away from the hull – this prevents it from hitting the boat and gives more foot room when climbing.
- Safety: Always ensure the ladder is locked in the down position before descending. When retracting, check that it is secured (with a bungee or locking latch, for example) so it doesn’t drop down while underway.
