This Ø5 mm plastic button serves as the base (male component) of a standard snap fastener commonly used for boat canvas covers and cushions. Replacing a metal stud with a high-grade plastic one brings several benefits – it will never rust, won’t cause unsightly rust streaks on fabric, and is inert (avoids galvanic corrosion when mounted on metal surfaces). The inner bore is 5 mm, perfectly sized for a typical screw (#8 – #10 or 4.8–5.5 mm). The screw head sits in a countersunk recess in the button, nearly flush with the top – allowing the female snap to click securely over it.
Installation is straightforward: drill a pilot hole at the desired location, place the stud base, and secure it with a flat-head stainless screw. There are many applications – install these bases on your boat’s gunwales, console, or cockpit coamings, on the frame of spray curtains, or any solid structure where you need to attach a canvas or cover. The plastic studs withstand tension and pulling forces, keeping your cover tight, yet they unsnap easily when you pull the canvas off.
We offer the bases in two colors – white and black – giving you flexibility to choose what looks best. White buttons blend into light-colored fiberglass and canvas, while black is ideal for dark fabrics or frames. Plastic snap bases are a popular choice among boat owners because they eliminate the corrosion issues that metal snaps often face, thereby extending the life of your covers. Pair these stud bases with the appropriate snap sets (e.g. 17 mm chrome brass cap sets) to achieve a secure, long-lasting, and neat fastening for your boat cover or upholstery.
