The Grapnel boarding anchor offers a combination of convenience and reliability for a wide range of boats. Featuring four steel flukes that deploy outward, it provides a strong hold on different seabed types – from rocky and stony bottoms to sandy flats and weed-covered areas. Its hot-dip galvanized finish protects the anchor from corrosion, making it suitable for regular use in both fresh and saltwater.

With weights from 1.5 to 40 kg, you can select the ideal size for your vessel:

  • 1.5 kg – Ideal for kayaks, canoes, small inflatables, and personal watercraft (around 2–3 meters length). Perfect as a lightweight anchor for day trips, fishing in calm waters, or securing a kayak while swimming.
  • 3 kg – Recommended for small dinghies and jon boats (~4–5 m). Provides a bit more holding power for moderate currents and breezes when fishing or crabbing.
  • 5–7 kg – Suited for medium boats around 5–6 m (e.g. runabouts or center console fishing boats). These sizes offer good stability in stronger currents or choppier conditions.
  • 10–12 kg – Intended for vessels about 7–8 m (such as small sailboats or larger motorboats). An excellent choice as a primary anchor under heavier conditions or overnight anchoring.
  • 15 kg – Suggested for boats ~9–10 m, or as a dependable secondary (stern) anchor on larger yachts.
  • 20–30 kg – Designed for big motor cruisers or sailboats (~10–13 m). They ensure secure holding even in challenging weather and deeper waters.
  • 40 kg – The heaviest variant, meant for vessels 14 m and above, or permanent moorings. It delivers exceptional holding power and stability, even in stormy conditions.

Using this anchor is straightforward: attach your rope or chain, toss the anchor overboard, and it will quickly sink and set as its weighted end drives the prongs into the bottom. To retrieve, pull steadily; if the anchor is firmly stuck, use a trip line or buoy attached to the crown ring to help break it free.

Usage Tips: Pair the anchor with an appropriate rode (for example, a combination of rope and 3–5 meters of chain for smaller sizes, more chain for larger anchors) to maximize holding power. The foldable Grapnel anchor makes an excellent spare anchor – its compact form means you can stow it away for emergencies or lending to a friend’s boat. It’s also a favorite for fishing and diving trips, allowing quick deployment and retraction when moving between spots frequently. With this versatile anchor on board, you’re equipped for secure anchoring virtually anywhere your adventures take you.
