The “Bull Dog” cleat is a modern mooring solution that combines sleek design with exceptional strength. Made from marine-grade 316 stainless steel, this cleat withstands heavy strain during docking and will not rust even after years of exposure to saltwater. Its mirror-polished finish not only enhances appearance but also allows lines to slide smoothly and makes it easy to wash off salt and grime.
The Bull Dog design is characterized by a lower profile and more compact shape compared to traditional horn cleats. Lines can be quickly wrapped around the broad top bar, and the low “horns” reduce the chance of snagging gear or toes. Installation is done via sturdy threaded studs or bolts that remain hidden below deck – this not only gives a clean look but also removes any protruding hardware on deck that could cause trips or stubbed toes.
Available Sizes & Recommendations:
- 160 mm Cleat: Suitable for small to medium boats (approximately up to 16–20 feet). Ideal for mooring fishing boats, RIBs, and runabouts using lines up to about 10–12 mm in diameter. Its compact size provides ample strength for these applications while saving space on the deck
- 200 mm Cleat: Recommended for larger boats and yachts (around 20–30+ feet), where thicker lines (12–16 mm) are in use and higher holding power is required. The longer length accommodates bulky ropes and withstands greater loads, for example when docking in strong currents or winds
- Both cleat sizes are designed for permanent installation on the deck or gunwale. Mount the cleats near common tie-off points (bow, stern, midship) so mooring lines pull straight and do not put undue lateral stress on the fasteners
- When installing, use a suitable bedding compound under the cleat base and stainless backing plates or locknuts to ensure the cleat remains secure over time. It’s advisable to periodically check the tightness of the fasteners, especially after heavy use or exposure to storm conditions
