Round deck hatches are somewhat uncommon and elegant, adding a retro charm or design accent to any deck. This model of round hatch combines robust construction with a beautiful circular profile. The frame is made of high-quality aluminum, anodized for durability – it is ribbed and sealed to the deck to prevent leaks. Set into it is a tempered glass lens (or in some cases a special marine acrylic) of sufficient thickness to withstand loads like someone walking on it or a wave impact. The round shape of the glass/acrylic allows panoramic light entry into the space below and is often used above round or central cabins and salons where aesthetics matter.

Opening Mechanism: Depending on the size, the hatch has either a single central locking handle (for smaller diameters) or two opposite handles (for larger diameters) for more even sealing pressure. It opens upward – the lid is lifted on integrated hinges. For medium and large models, a support stay or friction arm is provided to hold the hatch open at about a 90° angle or at a vent position. This is especially handy when airing out the cabin, so that the hatch stays open without needing to be held, even if there’s a bit of motion. To close, the stay is released, the lid is pulled down, and the handles (or T-handle) are latched, pressing the lid firmly against the rubber seal. The gasket runs the full circle and makes the closure watertight.

Sizes & Recommended Use:

  • Ø280 mm internal (Ø332 mm external): The smallest option – suitable as a ventilation hatch for small cabins, heads, or as an oversized portlight on the hull. For example, you might install it on the roof of a forward cabin of a 5 m boat to provide extra light and airflow.
  • Ø380 mm internal (Ø≈432 mm external): A medium-size round hatch – this size can already serve as an access/exit in case of emergency. Good for boats 6–8 m, above the salon or main cabin. The round window adds a luxurious look and breaks up the straight lines on the deck.
  • Ø478 mm internal (Ø530 mm external): A large round hatch – often used on bigger yachts (~9–12 m) where it might be the main hatch over the bow cabin. Through an opening this size, an adult can easily climb out if needed, which makes it functional as an escape hatch as well as providing abundant light and ventilation.
  • Ø522 mm internal (Ø574 mm external): An extra-large round hatch – for luxury yachts or special applications. This size is almost like a small round door – convenient for loading bulky gear into the yacht (such as folded sails, life rafts) and an excellent source of light. It’s typically mounted on sailing yachts above the salon or on motor yachts with classic designs.

Special Features: The round hatch has a relatively low profile above deck but does protrude slightly (especially the larger sizes have a domed shape to shed water). It can be stepped on if necessary, but always with non-marking shoes and carefully – tempered glass is strong but smooth, so manufacturers often add a non-slip texture on its surface or on the frame to prevent slipping if you do step on it.

Maintenance involves rinsing the hatch with fresh water, cleaning the glass/acrylic with a proper window cleaner (or mild soapy water if it’s acrylic), and periodically lubricating the hinges and latches with a bit of silicone spray. Regularly check the seal’s condition – if it loses elasticity after years, it can be replaced to ensure continued watertight performance.

With this round deck hatch, your boat gains a unique blend of style and practicality: the circular shape is pleasing to the eye and makes a statement, while the solid build and dependable closure ensure the hatch’s functions are fully met – providing light, air, and safety for you and your crew.
