The Honda BF175D marks Honda’s entry into the large V6 outboard class, designed for offshore and high-speed boats. With a full 3.583L of displacement, this engine delivers massive thrust – necessary for pushing heavy hulls, getting big boats out of the hole quickly, and maintaining high speeds under load. The V-6 cylinder configuration provides exceptionally smooth operation, with minimal vibration and surprisingly low noise for this level of power.

The BF175D comes equipped with all the advanced systems Honda has developed. Its multi-port PGM-FI fuel injection ensures an optimal mixture for each cylinder, contributing to an even power output. During hard acceleration, the BLAST system greatly improves low-end pick-up – especially important for snapping such a large engine into action. And once you reach cruising speed, the Lean Burn Control (ECOmo) technology automatically leans the mixture to reduce fuel consumption – a key benefit for long offshore runs.

A standout feature of the BF175D (in the XDU variant) is the electronic throttle and shift control – Drive-by-Wire (iST). In lieu of mechanical cables, commands are transmitted electronically, giving instantaneous response and silky-smooth gear changes. This also simplifies setting up multiple control stations (fly-by-wire) on board – a valuable asset on larger yachts and cruisers that may have secondary helm positions.

Cooling for this V6 is a quadruple-circuit system, engineered to keep optimal temperatures even under extreme loads and tropical heat. The alternator is beefed up to 60A, and with the AMP+ feature the engine’s ECU can temporarily raise idle speed to boost charging when it detects a heavy electrical draw. The rugged gearcase and reinforced design allow the BF175 to run at high RPM for extended periods. And of course, Honda backs this engine with a 5-year personal use warranty, giving the owner peace of mind.
