The Mercury F2.5 is the entry point into Mercury’s outboard lineup – the smallest model, yet one that offers the same legendary reliability in a scaled-down form. This 2.5HP motor is extremely popular among beginner boaters, owners of small inflatable boats, as well as seasoned sailors who use it as a backup. Weighing under 18 kg, the F2.5 is so light that it can be moved without assistance and mounted in minutes. Its simple design (no battery, no electric start) means you can rely on it even in the most remote locations – the only thing it needs is fuel. The Mercury F2.5 is a four-stroke, which eliminates the need to mix oil with gasoline and reduces smoke. With it, you get enough thrust to cover distances that would be tiring to row, and to reach spots that larger boats wouldn’t dare go.
- Smallest Motor, Big Convenience: The Mercury F2.5 is designed to be a “grab-and-go” solution. Its compact dimensions allow it to be stored almost anywhere – in a garage, closet, or even a larger cabinet in an RV or yacht. Carrying it to the shore is easy thanks to the built-in handle. If you have a foldable or inflatable boat, this motor will sit right next to it in your trunk and complete your kit without taking up space. Unlike electric trolling motors, you’re not limited by batteries – the F2.5 can run for hours on a few liters of gasoline.
- Perfect for the Tiniest Vessels: Whether it’s a 2–2.5 meter inflatable, a small kiddie dinghy, a canoe, or even a DIY mini-boat – 2.5HP will push it with ease. The speed it achieves is akin to vigorous paddling, but you save your energy and can focus on steering or fishing. On calm water with one person, the Mercury F2.5 will get you to your destination steadily and safely. With two persons, the speed is more modest, but the engine still gets the job done.
- Simple and Safe Operation: Operating the Mercury 2.5 is extremely straightforward – turn the fuel vent and choke to the “start” position, give the starter cord a smooth pull, and the engine comes to life. There’s no gear shift lever as on larger models – when set to “start” you’re in neutral; a slight twist of the throttle engages the forward drive automatically. To stop moving, just twist the throttle back to idle/neutral. If you need to go backwards, rotate the motor and throttle up – simple and effective. A safety lanyard kill-switch is provided and should be clipped on the operator – even on a tiny motor, safety is addressed.
- Quiet, Clean and Efficient: The four-stroke 2.5HP Mercury runs remarkably quietly for its size – you’ll mostly hear gentle splashes and a soft purr that won’t hinder conversation. Exhaust is expelled underwater through the prop, and the small engine sips so little fuel that the emissions are minimal. That means less gasoline smell – a big plus if you use the motor on small ponds or enclosed marinas. Fuel consumption is roughly around a liter per hour at open throttle, so one full internal tank can give you quite a bit of time on the water.
- Your Backup Plan: Many owners of larger boats purchase the Mercury F2.5 as an emergency kicker. Despite its low horsepower, it can push a 4–5 meter boat slowly towards shore if the main engine fails. You simply clamp it onto the transom (most big boats have an auxiliary mount or space) and putter to safety. In those moments, the little Mercury can literally save the day. It’s ready whenever you need it – with no complex electronics dependent on a battery, no registration or paperwork – just pure mechanical reliability in a small package.
