The EV-DBW Pilot system is an advanced autopilot designed specifically for boats with digital, drive-by-wire steering. Unlike a traditional autopilot that drives a hydraulic pump or mechanical actuator, the EV-DBW interfaces directly with the vessel’s electronic steering system. This makes it ideal for modern motor yachts and high-end powerboats equipped with fly-by-wire or joystick helm controls, where precise automatic course keeping is desired without adding extra hydraulic hardware.

At the core of the EV-DBW system is the EV-2 sensor module – an intelligent 9-axis heading sensor that communicates directly with the boat’s digital steering via a CAN bus connection. Because the EV-2 can interface directly with steer-by-wire systems, this autopilot does not require a separate ACU (Actuator Control Unit), simplifying installation and reducing system components. The kit also includes a full set of SeaTalkng cabling and the p70Rs autopilot controller – a rotary control head that’s well-suited for powerboats, providing an intuitive interface to switch modes and adjust the course with precision. The EV-DBW Pilot ties into the boat’s network seamlessly, sharing data with other onboard instruments (navigation, engine displays, etc.) for enhanced control and situational awareness.

The EV-DBW retains all the benefits of the Evolution range – easy setup with no compass calibration needed, self-learning algorithms, and rock-solid performance in changing conditions. The EV-2 sensor continuously monitors the vessel’s motion (heading, pitch, roll) and adapts steering commands to maintain a steady course. The p70Rs control head provides an ergonomic interface with a bright screen, combining push-buttons and a rotary knob for fine adjustments. You can trust the EV-DBW to keep your course even at high speeds or during complex maneuvers, while it communicates with the rest of your electronics to follow the most efficient path.

Raymarine’s EV-DBW Pilot is intended for vessels equipped with the latest digital steering platforms. Typical applications include Teleflex/SeaStar Optimus electronic-hydraulic steering for outboards, ZF pod drive and other joystick steering systems, Yanmar VC10/JC10 controls, as well as Volvo Penta IPS/Aquamatic inboard propulsion systems. (Integration with Volvo IPS requires an optional Volvo gateway module.) For boats with conventional hydraulic steering, the EV-DBW is not applicable – one should select an appropriate Evolution autopilot pack with a physical drive unit (e.g. EV-150, EV-200 or EV-400 Power Pilot depending on vessel size).
