The Raymarine EV-200 Sail Pilot is designed for mid-sized sailing yachts with mechanical steering systems (e.g. cable or wheel steering). It provides reliable automatic course-keeping under sail, allowing the crew to focus on sail trim and navigation. The EV-200 Sail is well-suited to cruising sailboats in the roughly 30–40 ft range (around 9–12 m), maintaining a steady heading even as wind and sea conditions change.

This autopilot system includes the Evolution EV-1 heading sensor (a 9-axis solid-state compass), the ACU-200 actuator control unit, and the p70s autopilot control head optimized for sailboats (with a push-button interface and bright color display). The complete system pack (SKU T70158) also comes with a powerful 12 V Type 1 mechanical linear drive that directly moves the rudder (tiller or quadrant). This below-decks linear drive operates smoothly and quietly while delivering the thrust needed for boats up to 11,000 kg displacement. For sailors looking to upgrade an older autopilot, an EV-200 Sail bundle without the drive unit (T70155) is available – perfect for using an existing mechanical drive while getting the latest Evolution technology.

The EV-200 Sail employs Raymarine’s advanced Evolution AI technology, which eliminates the need for complicated calibration procedures – once installed, the autopilot is essentially ready to go. The EV-1 sensor continuously monitors the vessel’s heading, heel, and trim, and adapts the steering to keep you on course in all conditions. When integrated with a wind instrument, the autopilot can operate in Wind Vane mode, maintaining a constant angle to the wind – an invaluable feature for long upwind legs. There’s also an Auto Tack function to assist when tacking the boat: with the push of a button, the pilot will turn the yacht through the wind by a fixed angle while you handle the sheets. All these modes are easily managed through the p70s control head, which remains clearly visible even in bright sunlight.

As a mid-range sailing autopilot, the EV-200 Sail addresses the needs of most family cruisers and club racers. For smaller vessels (up to ~6–7 m or ~5–6 tons), Raymarine’s EV-100 Wheel or EV-100 Tiller pilots are more appropriate for that category. Conversely, for larger and heavier yachts (above 11 tons), moving up to a higher-capacity system like the EV-400 Sail is recommended, which comes with a more powerful linear or rotary drive for big boats. The EV-200 Sail offers an excellent balance of power and precision for mid-sized sailboats, ensuring reliable course-keeping on long voyages and through varied sea conditions.
