The Quicksilver Gear Lube Pump is designed to make changing your boat’s lower unit oil as easy and clean as possible. This compact hand pump threads directly onto the mouth of a standard 1-quart/1-liter gear lube bottle (such as Quicksilver Premium or High Performance Gear Lube). With a few squeezes of the pistol-grip handle, it forces new oil from the bottom up into the drive’s gearcase – the proper method that ensures complete filling and avoids trapping air bubbles.

The pump’s body is universal and fits a 3/8"-16 drain/fill port, used on most American-made marine drives (Mercury outboards, MerCruiser sterndrives, etc.). For added versatility, the kit includes an M8 x 1.25 adapter fitting – the size found on many Japanese and European outboards (Yamaha, Suzuki, Honda, etc.). This means with one tool you can service a variety of engines and sterndrives.

A flexible hose with a threaded fitting on the end makes it easy to reach fill ports even in tight spaces and allows pumping without kinking the line. The pump is lightweight and portable – an ideal accessory for your garage workshop or to carry on board for long trips in case a quick gear oil check or top-off is needed.

  • Typical use cases: Used for changing the gear oil in outboard and sterndrive lower units. Whether you’re doing annual maintenance or preparing for winterization, this pump lets you quickly drain old oil and then pump in new oil from the bottle until it flows out of the upper vent. It’s indispensable for servicing boats with single or twin engines, allowing fast switching between bottles for higher volume gearcases. Both DIY boaters and professional mechanics use this tool to save time and ensure a thorough fill.
  • Recommended boats/environments: Suitable for all boats with outboard motors or sterndrives that have a lower gearcase needing regular oil changes – from small fishing boats with portable outboards (even 20-30 HP engines benefit from precise filling) to large offshore boats with multiple V6/V8 outboards, as well as runabouts and cruisers with sterndrives. In a busy marine service center, this pump speeds up maintenance on a variety of vessels. For personal use, it empowers boat owners to perform their own gear lube changes, saving cost and downtime.
  • Usage tips: Always change gear lube when the engine/drive has warmed (but is off) – warm oil drains more easily. Securely screw the pump onto your oil bottle, attach the hose fitting to the drive’s bottom drain port, and remove the upper vent plug to allow air to escape. Pump slowly until new oil begins to trickle out of the upper hole with no air bubbles – that indicates the gearcase is full. Then install the upper plug, quickly remove the hose and install the bottom plug. Be prepared to catch any drips – keep a rag under the gearcase during the process. After use, wipe down the pump and hose to keep them clean for next time and cap the oil bottle to prevent spills. This routine will give you a complete, mess-free fill and extend the life of your lower unit by ensuring proper lubrication.
